GENERAL SUMMARY:
Supervises and directs the officers assigned to his/her shift and assists in conducting surveillance so as to provide a safe and secure environment within the buildings of the hospital and in the parking lots.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Oversees all security officers' activities on assigned shift, make shift and duty assignments.
Assists Director on hospital related investigations.
Assists Director and Safety Office with establishing departmental goals, as well as determining manner in which to best achieve goals.
Performs daily, weekly, monthly and annual paperwork duties, especially with regard to personnel matters of direct subordinates.
Performs day-to-day security officer functions.
Patrols the hospital, hospital grounds and parking lots so as to maintain a safe and secure environment.
Initiates investigations into incidents or activities of criminal nature and submits appropriate information to law enforcement agencies as directed.
Assumes responsibility for proper inventory, pickup, transport and storage of patient valuables and after hour patient deposits.
Maintains storage and records of lost, found and stolen property of visitors, patients and employees.
Controls loud or disorderly patients or visitors and summons police to assist if necessary.
Provides accurate directions, information, and, if necessary, escort to the public.
Provides traffic control, as needed.
Operate required vehicle(s) in a safe manner to perform required duties of the position.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs simple maintenance on parking lot equipment (i.e., clears personnel ticket dispensers, replaces broken gate arms).
Assists with the movement of patients as requested by nursing staff.
Keeps Director advised of all personnel matters of appointed subordinates.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
High school degree or GED required.
Associates degree preferred.
2-3 years security supervisory experience or related experience.
Valid Driver’s/Chauffeurs License required, must meet Mercy’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34-66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)

Walking: Moving about on foot particularly for long distances.

Sitting: While driving a car to patrol parking lots while writing reports,
Talking: Expressing ideas by means of the spoken word both in person and over radio to give and receive instructions and information.
Bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling: With some freedom to choose which position.
Climbing: To ascend stairs
Hearing: Receiving detailed information through oral communications both in person and over radio.
Running: To address emergency situations.
Driving: Sitting while driving vehicle.
Stooping: Bending at the waist while getting into and out of vehicle.
Handling: Working with whole hand to drive vehicle, to load/unload supplies, materials into and from vehicle.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction to load/unload and deliver materials/supplies into and from vehicle.
OCCASIONAL
Repetitive motions: Substantial motions of the wrists, hands and fingers while typing and filing.
Lifting: In excess of 100 pounds while lifting patients/baggage/valuables.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
If a patient is unable to function independently, a mechanical/assistive device and/or additional personnel must be utilized. If an object requires lifting > 50 lbs., additional equipment/personnel must also be utilized.
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly. Sedentary work involves sitting.
Heavy work: Exerting up to 65 lbs. (push/pull force) to move frequently, and lifting up to 50 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 40 lbs. frequently, and lifting up to 20 lbs. constantly, to move patient and/or objects.
VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:
Visual acuity required to inspect premises and compile incident reports. Work involves use of computer terminal.
INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to maintain satisfactory job performance and a high standard of both courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients, and visitors despite the stress of a hospital work environment.
Ability to work with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
Standard medical, nursing, special, or office equipment found in the assigned area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The worker may be exposed to patients with possible communicable diseases.
The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Temperatures occasionally below 32 degrees and above 100 degrees.
The worker is subject to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, vehicles and disruptive patients/visitors.
The worker is subject to noise while in certain areas of the hospital; i.e., boiler room.
Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, therefore, are included in the OSHA Exposure Control Plan with its specifications, for preventing contact with the above material.
