Purpose
The Student Office Assistant provides administrative and general office support to the University Unions Executive Office. This position serves as a welcoming and professional first point of contact for students, staff, faculty, University partners, and visitors while assisting with routine daily operations of the office.
The position provides an opportunity to gain experience in a professional university office environment while developing skills in customer service, communication, organization, administrative support, and office operations.
This position is open to both Work-Study and non-Work-Study.
Responsibilities
Serve as a welcoming and professional first point of contact for visitors to the University Unions Executive Office.
Greet and assist students, staff, faculty, University partners, and guests, and direct visitors to the appropriate staff member or resource.
Answer and route incoming phone calls and respond to general office inquiries.
Assist with routine administrative duties including filing, scanning, copying, printing, data entry, and document organization.
Receive, sort, and distribute mail, packages, correspondence, and other office materials.
Maintain discretion and confidentiality when handling University, employee, student, or departmental information.
Complete routine opening, closing, and daily office tasks as assigned.
Maintain dependable attendance and professional communication regarding scheduling and work responsibilities.
Provide additional administrative and operational support to the University Unions Executive Office as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Must be a current student at The University of Texas at Austin and meet the University's student employment eligibility requirements, including enrollment in at least six (6) semester credit hours, unless otherwise eligible under university policy.
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to interact professionally with a variety of university constituents and visitors.
Ability to follow established procedures and instructions.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage routine tasks independently while also working collaboratively with office staff.
Dependability, professionalism, punctuality, and discretion.
Ability to appropriately handle confidential or sensitive information.
Basic computer skills and ability to learn University and departmental systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous customer service, administrative, reception, or office experience.
Experience using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, or similar applications.
Experience working in a professional, higher education, or customer-facing environment.
Hourly Rate
$10.00 per hour; up to 19 hours per week
Working Conditions
Typical professional office environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, faculty, University partners, and visitors. Work primarily involves use of a computer, telephone, and standard office equipment.
Work Shift / Availability Requirements
Work schedule will be established based on Executive Office operational needs and the student’s class schedule.
Availability during regular University business hours is required.
Consistent and reliable attendance during scheduled shifts is expected.
