Job Description Summary

The Field Service Automation Team, within the Services Product Management & Systems Engineering organization, is seeking a Principal Engineer - Wind Turbine Serviceability and Maintenance Innovation. As the Principal Engineer, you are responsible for the overall technical underwriting and acceptance of design, development, and implementation associated with serviceability, inspection/maintenance innovation, and climb reductions in wind turbines. This role is responsible for leading the organizational design effectiveness for new products and service programs. This involves ensuring designs protect service methods with technical soundness and field practicality, including simple tooling designs and access solutions, and evaluating off-the-shelf technologies to improve safety, quality, delivery, cost, and maintainability. A key focus of this role is driving service climb reduction through improved turbine design, access optimization, and the deployment of maintenance technologies.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Own and author design practice for implementing an executable Design For Serviceability (DFS) process, including; coaching & mentoring cross-functional teams by driving simplification, standardization, and best-practice sharing across serviceability, repair, and inspection development teams.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce service climb requirements through design changes, access improvements, remote handling, and task simplification.
  • Technically assess commercially available and off-the-shelf tools and technologies to modify or replace current solutions, ensuring the proper SQDC considerations when preparing for field deployment.
  • Influence technical rigor for acceptance of design decisions, DFMEA, root cause analysis, design methods and tools.
  • Maintain broad awareness of efforts, while going to Gemba/Kaizen, within the Serviceability and Field Engineering teams and work closely with other PEs and TLs to maintain synergies, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Create standard work templates and trainings to refine and standardize service methods, inspection workflows, work instructions, and technical requirements.
  • Chair technical reviews of serviceability, maintenance, and inspection concepts to ensure they meet design requirements and deliver a safe, high quality, effective, repeatable, cost effective, and meet practical field practices.
  • Serve as a mentor and reviewer to New Unit NPI teams as they incorporate serviceability, access, and inspection-enabling features into turbine designs.
  • Actively work with controlled title holder community to ensure communication, best practices, and lessons learned are leveraged across the Onshore business.
  • Work with people leaders to mentor and develop technical talent.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience with at least 5 years in serviceability, repair development, tooling, or field support engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and developing field service processes.
  • Experience designing simple tooling, fixtures, and access solutions to support wind field services or maintenance operations.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing off-the-shelf/commercial tooling, drone, or remote inspection solutions.
  • Proven experience mentoring and guiding others on serviceability, inspection, and tooling creation.

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to climb wind turbines and work at heights.
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally up to 10% of the time when required.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong technical expertise in wind turbine serviceability, field execution needs, inspection methods, and maintainability requirements with demonstrated ability to design and own engineering outcomes regarding safety, quality, and fulfillment of customer needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, including remote teams, through design assessments and root cause assessments.
  • Experience in complex issue resolution by coordinating cross-functional teams and demonstrating analytical problem-solving skills utilizing tools such as failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), reliability engineering, RCA 8D process, etc.
  • Knowledge of wind turbine industry standards and regulations as it pertains to serviceability, maintenance, and inspections.
  • Experience in project management by creating a clear, executable path from high level objectives, and demonstrating operational execution rigor by ensuring the objectives are realized.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to individuals at all levels of the organization while ensuring transparency and gaining alignment with internal/external stakeholders.
  • Track record of curiosity and a strong passion for identifying and turning new ideas, technologies, and methodologies into product differentiated outcomes while not being afraid to challenge the status quo.
  • Experience with coaching, mentoring, and developing technical engineering talent to guide their professional growth and career advancement.

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $131,700.00 and $219,300.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

 

 

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
