POSITION SUMMARY:

The Model Maker is responsible for fabricating and testing product development prototypes and models. This role works from defined specifications, sketches, and other technical information provided to determine and apply the appropriate fabrication and drafting methods to support product development.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Build prototypes of new designs, perform or assist with testing, evaluate designs, and provide feedback and formal input on designs produced in the model shop.
  • Make fixtures and tooling as required.
  • Work with a variety of raw materials including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, composites, laminates, plastics, and miscellaneous packaging materials.
  • Maintain accurate records and appropriate disposition of shop requests, test data, load testing results, and related documentation.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on shop equipment.
  • Maintain shop in a clean, orderly, and safe condition, ensuring tools and supplies are properly stored.
  • Create, process, and initiate Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) into the appropriate process; inputs product data and electronically manages related product information as required.
  • Model and design new products and perform 3D printing for rapid prototyping under direction.
  • Assist multidisciplinary teams with process improvements through process observation, documentation, improvement recommendations, training on current and improved processes, and quality checks and testing.
  • Demonstrate regular attendance and timeliness in reporting to work, meetings, and completing assignments.
  • Ability to work and interact well with others.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide timing commitments for new products.
  • Electronically transmits preliminary drawing and specification data to support timely entry of bills of materials, product structure, and routing.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of departmental procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associate or technical degree in engineering technology, drafting, manufacturing technology, or another related field is preferred.

Experience: No previous experience required, if degreed. Minimum of 2 years of experience in prototype fabrication, model making, machining, welding, or metal fabrication role, if non-degreed.

Required Skills:

  • Basic PC skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to recognize and work to close tolerances and high-quality standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and shop sketches.
  • Possess basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to read and accurately use measuring instruments, including tape measures, micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and hardness checkers.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and understand the capabilities of applicable sheet metal, machining, woodworking, and welding equipment:
    Sheet metal equipment: power shear, leaf brake, turret punch, notcher, press brake, plasma cutter.
    Machine tools: milling machine, pedestal grinder, drill press, band saw, cut-off saw, belt sander.
    Woodworking equipment
    : table saw, radial arm saw, portable saw, router, pneumatic staple gun.
  • ​Arc welding skills, including various gauges, mixed gauges, joint types, positions, and selection of current, wire type, and feed rate.
  • Resistance/spot welding skills, including electrode selection, weld sequence, current selection, and clamping pressure.
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Willing to contribute ideas and suggestions.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to determine proper fabrication sequence.
  • Knowledge of layout work and bend allowances.
  • Ability to properly use and maintain metal working, woodworking, and mechanic’s hand tools.

SPECIAL DEMANDS

  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must maintain required forklift operator certification.
  • Ability to maneuver manufacturing environments and navigate stairs as needed.
  • Ability to work safely around machinery, welding equipment, and other conditions common to the manufacturing environment.
  • Must be able to stand and work on concrete surfaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to travel as necessary to support company priorities.
