X-Ray Technician

The X-Ray Technician monitors radiology supplies, ensures that the x-ray machines are set at the correct radiation levels, performs routine duties of taking x-ray for patients and processing x-ray images. Interacts with diverse patients and works with physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This job classification is within the Medical job family.  Incumbents in this classification are first-line employees of health services.   This classification may require work in secure facilities.  This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.

• Verifies patients' identity and reviews physicians’ orders before beginning x-ray procedures.
• Uses x-ray equipment to take radiographic images of patients' bones, tissues, and organs as per physicians’ written orders.
• Explains x-ray procedures to patients and answers their questions.
• Positions patients, accordingly, which may include lifting and moving patients with limited mobility.
• Limits patients' exposure to radiation by placing lead shields on patients where needed.
• Ensures that the x-rays taken are of sound quality to prevent repeat procedures.
• Works closely with the resident Radiologist to determine whether further tests are required.
• Ensures that the x-ray equipment is regularly serviced and in good working order.
• Promptly notifies management of damaged or malfunctioning x-ray equipment.
• Maintains an accurate record of completed x-ray procedures.
• Maintains confidentiality of healthcare information.
• Assists in monitoring compliance with health care standards and procedures.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree in radiologic technology, radiology, related field AND two (2) year of x-ray technician experience;
 
OR,
 
Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.
 
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
Must be ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) eligible.
Must be certified as a Medical Radiologic Technologist by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.

Knowledge of:

• Steps and techniques needed to diagnose and examine patient’s medical condition and produce high-quality x-ray images.
• Using x-rays and other imaging equipment properly and safely.
• Functional knowledge of performing venography, myelography and gastrointestinal examinations in accordance with each patient’s medical history and primary diagnosis.
• Standard healthcare practices.
• Policies, practices, procedures, and terminology related to radiology and healthcare.
• Federal, State, Local and County nursing and other healthcare laws and requirements.
• Knowledge of and adherence to HIPAA and other federal and state laws requiring the confidential handling of certain health information.

Skill in:

• Strong technical skills in working with complex computers and radiology equipment.
• Strong communication skills in explaining radiology terms and procedures to patients.
• Excellent time management skills, attention to details. 
• Taking high-quality images using x-rays and processing 
• Prioritizing patient needs.
• Problem-solving and decision-making.
• Both verbal and written communication.

 
Ability to:

• Accurately position patients to produce high-quality images.
• Ability to work with complex computers and radiology equipment.
• Ability to use PACS and associated diagnostic imaging equipment.
• Operate computerized axial tomography (CT) Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Fluoroscopy and digital mammography technologies. 
• Maintain patients’ safety throughout the process.
• Ability to explain complex radiology terms and procedures to patients along with the ability to keep patient calm while performing tests.
• Ability to work well under pressure and handle difficult situation.
• Excellent physical stamina and ability to stand for long days.
• Work efficiently both independently and as part of a medical team.
• Manage time well and perform multiple tasks.
• Work effectively and courteously under high-pressure circumstances.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical and other County employees and officials, and the general public.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 35-100 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment.  Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting to perform the essential functions.   Subject to contact with communicable diseases, radiation, hazardous waste, human fecal matter and foul odors.

Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
