What this job involves

This position performs comprehensive inspection, repair, and maintenance of building roofing systems to preserve structural integrity, water sealing, and energy efficiency. The Roofing Technician evaluates roof conditions, diagnoses issues, executes repairs using various roofing materials and techniques, and maintains detailed documentation of all work performed. The role requires analyzing information from multiple sources to plan and prioritize work, ensure compliance with building codes and manufacturer specifications, and collaborate effectively with other technicians and engineers to maintain safe, functional roofing systems across industrial facilities.

Your day-to-day tasks will include:

• Inspect building roofs to locate leaks, assess damage, and determine optimal repair methods while documenting roof conditions and maintenance activities
• Repair and maintain roofing systems using modified plastics, elastomeric compositions, asphaltic materials, and waterproofing membranes on both low-slope and steep-slope roofs
• Install and repair roof components including vapor barriers, insulation layers, flashing, skylights, solar panels, and attic ventilation systems according to specifications
• Set up scaffolding for safe roof access, clean and maintain equipment, and clear gutters and drains to ensure proper drainage
• Measure roof dimensions, calculate material quantities, review building plans, and estimate costs, time, and resources needed for roofing projects
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on roofing systems while ensuring compliance with building codes, manufacturer requirements, and environmental protection standards
• Prepare supply orders, maintain daily reports and records, schedule and coordinate work activities, and assist in preparing project and departmental budgets

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Must be able to walk and inspect roofs and roof-related structures regularly
• Required to set up and work from scaffolding and elevated platforms
• Must be capable of working at heights on various roof types and slopes
• Physical ability to lift, carry, and maneuver roofing materials and equipment
• Must be able to operate spray guns, air compressors, heaters, and hand tools including brushes, knives, punches, and hammers
• Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures
• Must be willing and able to work overtime and respond to emergency call-ins as needed

Required Qualifications:

• High School diploma or GED
• Five years of experience with roofing and general building maintenance activities in an industrial setting
• Proficient knowledge of relevant building codes, legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures for roofing system installation and maintenance
• Demonstrated expertise in both low-slope and steep-slope roofing systems and repair techniques
• Competency in basic mathematics including fractions, addition, subtraction, and division
• Ability to follow all safety policies and procedures at all times without exception
• Valid certifications or licenses as required by local regulations for roofing work

Preferred Qualifications:

• Technical College or Trade Program completion, with Journeyman Roofer certification preferred
• Computer proficiency including corporate email, spreadsheets, word processing, and engineering drawing databases
• Experience with solar panel installation and attic ventilation system installation on existing structures
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound decision-making abilities
• Effective verbal, written, presentation, and listening communication skills
• Team building skills and demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with technicians, supervisors, and engineers
• Proven ability to work independently with effective time management skills and contribute recommendations for work method improvements
