Reporting to the Manager, Electrical Regulatory Compliance, the Specialist Electrical Compliance Engineer will provide subject matter expertise and compliance support to Suncor’s Oilsands Operations, with a primary focus on Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements for Suncor’s high, medium, and low impact power generation and transmission assets. In this role, you will provide guidance on a broad range of CIP compliance matters, support cybersecurity initiatives, and collaborate across Suncor business units to help protect the reliability and security of Alberta’s Bulk Electric System (BES) while meeting Suncor’s operational and regulatory commitments. You will also support audit readiness, evidence management, regulatory engagement, and continuous improvement of Suncor’s ARS compliance program.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Degree in electrical engineering and registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA, or equivalent experience/training
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the electricity or utility industry 
  • In-depth understanding of NERC/ARS CIP standards & regulatory frameworks
  • Professional certifications related to compliance, cybersecurity, or CIP, such as CISA or CISSP, are preferred 
  • Knowledge of Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES) operations. 
  • Previous experience working with regulatory bodies and compliance monitoring processes, including AESO, MSA, NERC, the AESO Alberta Risk-Based Compliance Monitoring Program, and/or the MSA Compliance Process 
  • Experience identifying and assessing compliance related events and working collaboratively to conduct root cause analysis investigations and support implementation of corrective actions 
  • Ability to clearly define and resolve complex, multi-variable problems 
  • Experience adopting or supporting technology enabled compliance tools that improve efficiency, such as ServiceNow or Enablon, is preferred  
  • Prior compliance or cybersecurity auditing experience preferred

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead activities that ensure Suncor’s compliance with ARS CIP requirements.  
  • Coordinate AESO compliance audits and self-certifications, including preparing, collecting, validating, and submitting audit and self-certification evidence, and coordinating with external auditors and regulatory bodies during audits and assessments
  • Work and interact with regulatory organizations including AESO, MSA, WECC, and NERC, and provide input on new ARS consultations
  • Prepare self-reports and mitigation plans for submission to the MSA that help prevent the future recurrence of compliance-related events 
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes and industry best practices related to ARS/NERC CIP standards 
  • Provide training and guidance to Suncor business units on ARS CIP compliance requirements and procedures 
  • Assist in the development and implementation of cybersecurity measures to protect critical infrastructure
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on compliance program effectiveness, including trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement
  • Participate in risk assessments and support development of mitigation plans to address identified compliance risks
  • Contribute to monthly electrical compliance stewardship reporting and KPI development

Location and Other Key Details: 

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave SW
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Some business travel required, approximately 10-15%
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based on years of experience and scope of work
