GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Recreation Center Supervisor Grade II

Under general supervision, plans, organizes and implements recreational and other activities and is responsible for the operations of a municipal recreation center.  
1. Plans and conducts a comprehensive year-round recreation program for a municipal recreation center.
2. Supervises assigned professionals, other recreation personnel engaged in conducting recreation center and playground activities, and building maintenance personnel.
3. Ensures that activities are properly conducted and recreational programs function as planned.
4. Prepares work schedules and instructs subordinates in work activities. 
5. Confers with assigned staff on current programs.
6. Listens and responds to employee issues.
7. Consults with and advises individuals, and/or community groups on recreation center use.
8. Organizes and arranges social functions, clubs, and athletic leagues.
9. Conducts special activities including, but not limited to, children’s parties, community programs, field day events, and basketball and playground ball leagues.
10. Orders equipment and supplies.
11. Collects and ensures the security of miscellaneous fees used for recreation center facilities.
12. Maintains records and prepares reports.
13. Ensures that buildings and grounds are properly cared for.
  • Bachelor’s degree with specialization in physical education, recreation or a related field of study.
  • Two years experience in conducting organized recreational activities. 
  • One year experience in supervising such activities at a community recreation center.
  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan Operator License. May be required to operate a motor vehicle.

Equivalency

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
Evaluation Plan
  • Interview: 70%
  • Evaluation of Training, Experience & Personal Qualifications: 30%
  • Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P: 100%
Additional points may be awarded for:
  • Veteran Points: 0 – 15 points
  • Detroit Residency Credit:   15 point

Knowledge of:

  • The goals of community recreation work.
  • The rules and equipment of athletic games.

Skill in

  • Effectively communicating with program participants, the general public and other departmental employees.
  • Use of personal computers, common office word processing, spreadsheet and database software.

Ability to:

  • Organize and conduct a wide variety of recreational activities.
  • Supervise the activities of a community recreation center.
  • Initiate new activities.
  • Promote neighborhood interest in community recreation centers.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with tact and diplomacy.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

  • The distinction between the two levels of Recreation Center Supervisor is based upon the size and nature of the Recreation Center; the number and variety of recreation activity facilities; the size, complexity, and diversity of recreation programs and participants; and the number and variety of employees supervised.
