This is a unique opportunity to play a senior leadership role in shaping and accelerating CommBank’s Defence industry proposition across Business Banking. As Executive Manager, Defence Industry Lead, you will help position CommBank as a credible, consistent and commercially disciplined banking partner to Australia’s Defence ecosystem.

See yourself in our team

Specialist Sales and Client Solutions brings together the best of CommBank’s products, channels and services to create leading industry propositions for key growth sectors, including Defence.

In this role, you will be accountable for translating Defence strategy into practical customer propositions, banker enablement, industry partnerships, pipeline activity and measurable commercial outcomes. You will work with internal and external stakeholders to support Australian Defence-sector businesses to grow, scale and strengthen sovereign capability through smarter banking, specialist insight and disciplined risk management.

This role will provide the opportunity to engage across the Defence ecosystem, including SMEs, emerging innovators, established contractors, primes, adjacent supply-chain businesses, government stakeholders and industry bodies.

Do work that matters

You will lead the Defence industry proposition for Business Banking, with responsibility for building a clear sector point of view, shaping customer propositions, supporting banker confidence, coordinating cross-functional delivery and converting market presence into qualified customer opportunities.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the Defence industry proposition for Business Banking, translating strategy into clear priorities, propositions, execution plans and measurable outcomes.

  • Building and maintaining a qualified Defence pipeline in partnership with Commercial Banking, Regional and Agribusiness Banking, Major Client Group, Transaction Banking Solutions, Payment Technical Sales, CommSec and Institutional Banking & Markets.

  • Supporting banker-led customer conversations through sector insight, proposition tools, case studies, risk guidance and customer-ready narratives.

  • Building banker confidence and capability in Defence-sector conversations, including procurement cycles, Department of Defence contracting, primes and subcontracting, risk appetite, E&S and FCC settings.

  • Developing and maintaining banker enablement assets, including playbooks, One.CBA content, training modules, customer case studies, qualification questions and escalation guides.

  • Building trusted relationships across the Defence ecosystem, including industry associations, primes, government stakeholders, innovation bodies and supply-chain networks.

  • Supporting CBA’s presence at Defence industry events, roundtables, summits and sponsored forums.

  • Partnering with Marketing and Corporate Affairs on thought leadership, customer stories, event strategy, content and market positioning.

  • Ensuring Defence activities are conducted in line with approved risk appetite, FCC, E&S, credit, conduct, regulatory and reputational-risk requirements.

  • Establishing clear objectives, key results and performance metrics, including pipeline, conversion, customer, banker capability, risk and market-presence reporting.

We’re interested in hearing from people who have

  • Significant experience in business or corporate banking, client solutions, sector-led growth or a related field.

  • Defence industry, government, procurement, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, maritime, cyber, dual-use technology or supply-chain experience.

  • Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to size opportunities, build business cases, shape pipelines and convert strategy into disciplined execution.

  • Proven experience influencing senior stakeholders across complex matrix environments.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex sector, policy or risk topics into clear banker, customer and executive narratives.

  • Strong risk judgement and the ability to operate in a highly regulated environment.

  • Established credibility or relationships across Defence-sector bodies, primes, SMEs, government stakeholders, industry groups or innovation ecosystems.

  • Experience in customer proposition design, market activation, thought leadership, event-led lead generation or strategic partnerships.

  • Exposure to E&S, human rights, financial crime, sanctions, export controls or reputational-risk considerations relevant to Defence-sector banking.
