Job Description

The Ophthalmic Technician I provides clinical and technical support to ophthalmologists and patients in a fast-paced eye clinic. This role performs patient assessments, diagnostic testing, and clinical procedures while preparing exam rooms, assisting with minor procedures, and supporting efficient clinic operations. Working closely with physicians and the care team, the Ophthalmic Technician helps deliver high-quality, patient-centered ophthalmic care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Obtain patient histories and perform comprehensive ophthalmic workups, including visual acuity, pupil assessment, intraocular pressure, visual fields, and other clinical measurements.

  • Perform diagnostic testing and administer ophthalmic medications as directed by the provider.

  • Prepare patients for examinations and minor procedures, assist physicians during procedures, and provide post-procedure instructions.

  • Assist with contact lens fittings and patient education.

  • Prepare eyeglass prescriptions, maintain instruments, and coordinate sterile processing.

  • Order medications and assist with inventory of clinical supplies and equipment.

  • Support clinic operations through scheduling assistance, phone triage, patient communication, and other administrative tasks.

  • Maintain accurate documentation while promoting quality improvement, patient safety, and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.

  • Pursue ongoing professional development and maintain required certifications.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or 0–3 years of ophthalmic or optometry experience with eligibility to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.

  • Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent customer service and patient care skills.

  • Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification within one month of hire and maintained thereafter.

  • Medical Assistant training or science background with the ability to complete and maintain ophthalmic skills training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher certification through JCAHPO.

  • Ophthalmology-focused unlicensed assistive personnel training.
