Job Summary
As Head of Engineering at AutogenAI, you will own the technical strategy, operational health and engineering culture of a global engineering organisation spanning London and the US (New York and Washington DC). You will lead through 2–3 Tech Leads, ultimately accountable for the output, quality and wellbeing of a wider team of around 15 developers.
This is a senior leadership role sitting within the Build function, reporting to the Chief Product Officer alongside Product, Design and GTM teams. You'll evolve the operational direction for engineering, scope the operational rigour needed to scale a fast-growing SaaS business, and ensure our engineering culture and practices keep pace with the demands of a global, always-on Enterprise AI product.
This is a high-impact, high-visibility role for an experienced engineering leader with a passionate focus on culture, performance, quality and operational excellence.
You’ll be instrumental in the build and ongoing delivery of a continuous deployment culture. You will carefully balance speed and quality through clear expectation setting, true cross functional collaboration and a customer facing approach.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Strategic Direction & Technical Leadership
- Own and evolve AutogenAI's technical strategy (in collaboration with our Chief Technical Architect) and engineering roadmap, ensuring alignment with product goals and company vision across all regions.
- Act as a senior technical voice at leadership level, partnering with the Chief People Officer and GTM to shape the direction of the Build operational strategy.
- Represent Engineering in customer facing scoping sessions with our top Enterprise clients.
- Make and own high-stakes decisions that affect the whole engineering organisation.
Engineering Operations & Scaling
- Review, evolve and continuously improve the operational backbone of engineering: delivery processes, engineering standards, on-call and incident practices, and cross-team ways of working.
- Own engineering-wide operational excellence- monitoring, triage, incident response and recovery practices- ensuring reliability and resilience across a 24-hour global footprint.
- Establish metrics and reporting that give visibility into engineering health, delivery predictability and team performance to senior stakeholders.
Leadership of Tech Leads & Wider Team
- Directly manage and develop 2–3 Tech Leads, providing coaching, career development and performance management.
- Hold ultimate accountability for the performance, growth and wellbeing of the wider ~15-person developer team, working through your Tech Leads to ensure consistent, high-quality line management across all regions.
- Develop an Engineering culture that celebrates ownership, accountability and quality.
- Build a strong bench of technical leadership talent, with a clear focus on succession planning as the team scales.
Global & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Lead a genuinely global organisation, ensuring consistent standards, culture and communication across London, NYC, Washington DC and Gold Coast, while being sensitive to regional nuances and time zone challenges.
- Partner closely with Product and Design leadership as part of the senior Build function leadership team, ensuring engineering strategy is tightly integrated with product and design strategy.
- Represent engineering in company-wide leadership discussions, budgeting and planning cycles.
Culture & Process Building
- Define and embed engineering standards, best practices and a culture of knowledge-sharing across a distributed, multi-region team.
- Drive continuous improvement in how the engineering organisation works, identifying and resolving systemic pain points across teams.
- Foster an inclusive, high-performance culture that supports rapid growth without compromising codebase health or team wellbeing.
You'll be working across a full-stack technology base of TypeScript (React, NestJS, Express) and Python, with the opportunity to shape technical direction across the entire stack, even as your day-to-day focus shifts towards leadership and strategy.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Senior Engineering Leadership: Proven experience leading engineering organisations at scale, including leading through other leaders (Tech Leads/Engineering Managers), not just individual contributors.
- Operational Excellence: A track record of building and improving engineering operations- delivery processes, incident management, reliability practices- in a fast-scaling environment.
- Global Team Leadership: Experience (or strong aptitude for) leading distributed teams across multiple countries and time zones, with the cultural awareness to lead effectively across geographies.
- Strategic & Commercial Thinking: Ability to connect technical strategy to business outcomes, and to operate confidently at a senior leadership table alongside Product, Design and People leadership.
- People Leadership: A genuine passion for developing leaders and teams, with experience managing managers and building succession pipelines.
- Technical Credibility: Strong technical background (TypeScript ecosystem experience highly relevant) sufficient to earn the trust and respect of a technical organisation, even while your role is primarily leadership-focused.
- Change Leadership: A track record of driving significant organisational or technical change, and building the case for it with stakeholders.
Requirements
- Experience: 8+ years in software engineering, including 4+ years in senior engineering leadership roles (e.g. Head of Engineering, Director of Engineering, Engineering Manager of Managers).
- Leadership Scope: Demonstrated experience managing other engineering leaders (Tech Leads/EMs), not just direct management of individual engineers.
- Global/Distributed Teams: Experience leading engineering teams across multiple countries or time zones is highly desirable.
- Technical Foundation: Strong technical grounding, ideally with experience across TypeScript-based stacks (React, NestJS, Express) and/or Python; comfort with cloud infrastructure and DevOps practices (e.g. Kubernetes, Terraform).
- Operational Rigour: Demonstrated experience building engineering operations- incident management, monitoring, delivery processes- in a scaling SaaS environment.
- Stakeholder Management: Comfortable operating at senior leadership level, reporting into and partnering with C-suite/People leadership.
- Enterprise SaaS Product: Experience driving quality and speed of an Enterprise SaaS product during a high-growth phase (e.g. Series B–D or equivalent).
- AI fluency: Prior experience with AI-driven SaaS products, NLP, or LLMs.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Competitive Salary: c.£150,000 - £180,000 depending on specific experience and qualifications relevant to the role.
- Stock Options: Meaningful equity in the company.
- Retirement Plan: Pension scheme to help secure your future.
- Paid Time Off: Unlimited vacation (Yes, you read right!)
- Flexible Work Options: Remote working arrangements
- Private Healthcare: Bupa Medical and Dental cover
- Life Insurance: Peace of mind for you and your family
- Paid parental leave: 16 weeks if you’ve just given birth, 4 weeks if your partner has just given birth (after one year of year of service)
- Additional Perks: Your choice of laptop (Mac or Windows), regular company events to connect with teammates, and opportunities for continued professional development.
Values in Action:
These aren’t just principles we print and forget – they’re how we work, how we treat each other, and how we deliver for our customers. They shape the company we are, and the one we aspire to become.
- Customers, Always: Everything starts with our customers. We walk in their shoes, speak their language, and build for their delight and success. We win when they win.
- Make It Happen: We move fast and take ownership. No waiting, no red tape – just action, urgency, and focus on outcomes. We ask for forgiveness, not permission.
- Learn and Invent: We stay curious. We learn what we can from past masters - and make up the rest. Change is constant, and so is our growth.
- Act Like Owners: Titles don’t solve problems - people do. We own challenges, break the rules when it’s necessary, and focus on what matters.
- Turn It Up to 11: There is no “Good enough”. We raise the bar, push boundaries, and keep building. There’s always a next level.
- Lead With Respect: We listen first, speak honestly, and value every perspective. Integrity, follow-through, and kindness matter.
- Build Trust Through Transparency: We default to openness. We give feedback, share information, and assume positive intent - no secrets, no silos.
