Medical Advisor

• Wellington based | up to 22 hours per week 

• Fixed term until September 2027

• Salary midpoint of $130,470 per annum pro-rated

Ko ake mahi - What you'll do 

In this role you will be part of a team approving new medicines for New Zealanders. By using your critical appraisal skills and clinical knowledge you will evaluate the clinical trial data and other scientific information to determine if the benefits of a medicine outweigh the risks of side effects. You will also help regulate medicines in use by evaluating if new indications are acceptable and monitoring safety. Your ability to build and maintain working relationships will help you effectively make decisions that will impact public health. If you are looking for a flexible role to balance family commitments or other part time clinical roles this is the job for you.

In this role you will 

• Evaluate clinical evidence – Assess the efficacy and safety of new and existing medicines to support regulatory decisions. 

• Advise expert committees – Present clinical evidence and recommendations to expert advisory committees to guide decision-making. 

• Identify and address key concerns – Review medicine applications, identify potential risks, and implement clinical and regulatory solutions for better patient outcomes. 

• Monitor and evaluate medicine safety – Contribute to performance monitoring, reporting, and continuous improvement of medicines regulation. 

• Support team capability and communication – Mentor colleagues, review Medsafe communications, and ensure high-quality clinical advice is provided across projects.

• You will have a medical qualification and be registered or eligible for registration with the New Zealand Medical Council 

• Excellent critical thinking with the ability to pull together clear ideas and conclusions from very large quantities of clinical data 

• Excellent written and oral communication with the ability to communicate complex ideas to different target groups 

• The ability to manage a dynamic workload with changing priorities

The Clinical Risk Management branch of Medsafe is responsible for provide advice on the clinical aspects of medicine applications, Clinical trial applications, and pharmacovigilance. We also publish Prescriber Update and provide the secretariat for the Medicines Adverse Reactions Committee.
