JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Description

Build the Future of Semiconductor Technology

Axcelis is a global leader in ion implantation and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. For more than four decades, we’ve partnered with the world’s top chipmakers to drive breakthroughs that power smartphones, electric vehicles, AI systems, and advanced computing technologies.

As a Manufacturing Test Development Engineer II, you will play a key role in advancing our test capabilities and manufacturing performance. You will take ownership of complex test systems, drive technical solutions, and contribute to the continuous improvement of manufacturing processes that ensure every Axcelis product meets the highest standards of quality, reliability, and performance.

This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to expand their technical leadership, influence cross-functional decisions, and deliver measurable impact across production and new product introduction efforts.

About the Role

In this role, you will lead the design, development, validation, and optimization of electrical and mechanical test solutions used in Axcelis manufacturing operations. You will work independently on complex problems, while collaborating closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to define test strategies, improve coverage, and enhance system performance.

You will drive initiatives that improve product reliability, reduce cycle time, and increase throughput—directly impacting operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

This position requires strong technical depth across multiple disciplines, including electronics, mechanical design, automation, instrumentation, and data analysis, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex system-level issues.

What You’ll Do

• Design, develop, and optimize advanced electrical and mechanical manufacturing test solutions, including automated test equipment, custom fixtures, and tooling
• Lead validation and qualification of test systems, ensuring robustness, repeatability, and scalability for production environments
• Own complex debugging efforts across test equipment, instrumentation interfaces, sensors, and PCBA-level hardware, driving root cause to resolution
• Analyze test data to identify trends, systemic issues, and opportunities for process improvement using statistical and data-driven methods
• Define test strategies and requirements in partnership with Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Process Engineering teams
• Drive improvements in test coverage, efficiency, and reliability to reduce downtime and improve throughput
• Support new product introduction by leading development of test solutions, influencing design for testability (DFT), and ensuring production readiness
• Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including test specifications, validation plans, procedures, and engineering reports
• Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives that enhance manufacturing performance and product quality
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance and supporting skill development
• Coordinate and manage projects, including timelines, deliverables, and cross-functional alignment

What We’re Looking For

Required Education & Experience:

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field - advanced degree preferred
• Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience in test development, manufacturing, or related fields

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency with CAD modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD
• Strong understanding of electrical schematics, PCB design, and debugging techniques
• Hands-on experience with lab instrumentation, including NI DAQ, NI PXI, DMMs, oscilloscopes, DAQs, and signal analyzers
• Experience designing and integrating automated test systems and fixtures
• Strong data analysis skills using tools such as Excel, Python, MATLAB, or similar
• Familiarity with statistical methods and process control techniques (SPC preferred)
• Experience with fabrication tools, including machining, 3D printing, and precision measurement tools
• Ability to manage technical projects and prioritize multiple initiatives effectively

Soft Skills:

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently drive complex issues to resolution
• Effective collaboration across cross-functional teams and organizational levels
• Clear and concise communication, including the ability to present technical information to diverse audiences
• High attention to detail with a focus on quality and reliability
• Proactive mindset with a continuous improvement orientation
