Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
• Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
• Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
• Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
• Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
• Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

Join us as a Senior Java Software Engineer, where you will play a key role within our Markets Technology team, delivering innovative solutions that support Securities Lending, Liquidity Finance and Prime Brokerage businesses. Our team is responsible for building and enhancing strategic platforms that support efficient trade processing, collateral optimisation and client servicing across global markets.
 

This role offers the opportunity to design, develop and maintain high-performing, scalable applications that support critical business functions. You will work closely with business analysts, architects, testers and fellow engineers to deliver robust technology solutions, contribute to technical design discussions and support continuous improvement across the software development lifecycle.

Your knowledge and experience will help shape key technology priorities that improve operational efficiency, support business growth and strengthen Barclays' ability to serve clients in a changing market environment. This role provides the chance to work on business-critical systems, help guide technical direction and contribute to the delivery of innovative solutions across a global technology platform.
 

To be successful as a Senior Java Software Engineer, you must have the following essential skills:
 

• Experience designing and delivering scalable, high-performing applications using Java, Spring and SQL within large-scale enterprise environments.
• Knowledge of containerisation technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes, and experience using Kafka or equivalent messaging technologies to build resilient, secure and event-driven solutions across distributed systems.
• The ability to build effective relationships with business analysts, project managers, testers, architects and engineering teams, communicate technical concepts clearly to a range of audiences and use Unix command-line tools to support development, troubleshooting, deployment and operational activities.
   

Some other highly valued skills may include:
 

• Knowledge of Securities Lending, Liquidity Finance or Prime Brokerage, particularly the Securities Borrowing & Lending (SBL) trade lifecycle and collateral processes.
• Experience developing UI/Frontend applications using JavaScript.
• Experience working within large-scale financial services or capital markets environments.
