Summary:
The Web Assistant supports the day-to-day communications and outreach activities for the School of Public Affairs with a focus on the school’s external website: https://www.american.edu/spa/. This position provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic student who is looking to build their communications and web design portfolio, with no prior website experience required.
Essential Functions:
Perform basic website updates to keep the website fresh and engaging.
Support efforts to improve Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on the website.
Support efforts to ensure that web pages and videos are digitally accessible and 508 compliant.
Other tasks as needed to support the school’s communications channels (social media, email, screens, etc.).
Competencies:
Strong attention to detail.
Good writing skills.
Good at working within a team.
Ability to learn new skills, platforms, and technologies at a rapid pace.
Microsoft Word & Excel or Google Docs equivalents.
Familiarity with HTML and/or CSS a plus, but not required.
Familiarity with website content management systems (CMS) a plus, but not required.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Part-time.
10 hours per week.
Salary Range:
$18.40 - $20.00 per hour.
Required Education and Experience:
American University student working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Previous experience working in digital communications or website development/design/management is a plus, but not required.
Previous training in digital communications or website development/design/management is a plus, but not required.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
All AU students are eligible to apply for this position, with a preference for those students with a Federal Work Study award.
