Description

Help maintain the facilities that keep Wichita's water system operating safely and reliably. As a Custodial Worker 2 in the Production and Pumping Division, you will perform advanced custodial and facility support work in water treatment plants, pumping stations, and other operational buildings that provide essential public utilities. This position is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and inspection-ready facilities through the operation of motorized custodial equipment, inventory management, minor building and equipment repairs, and day-to-day guidance of entry-level custodial staff. Your work directly supports employee safety, regulatory compliance, and the uninterrupted operation of critical water infrastructure. Starting Salary Range: $18.09 - $20.47 depending on experience and qualifications 

Workdays and Hours: Monday - Friday: 8:00am - 4:30pm

  • Performs diverse and/or complex custodial/janitorial work.
  • Instructs other workers in proper cleaning methods and in the use and care of equipment; inspects work to determine that instructions are carried out, and submits reports of work performed.
  • Makes minor repairs on buildings or equipment and reports needed major repairs to a supervisor.
  • Paints, moves and/or repairs furniture and equipment.
  • Maintains simple records and prepares reports.
  • May supervise entry-level custodial workers.
  • Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.
  • Examples of work performed are not intended to be all-inclusive. 
  • Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
  • Ability to push, pull, and control equipment weighing up to 350 pounds, up and down narrow ramps while operating hand and/or foot controls.
  • Ability to routinely restock and check cleaning supplies and inventory.
  • Climb a six-foot ladder while carrying cleaning equipment weighing up to 20 pounds in one hand.
  • Perform work in a confined area such as a restroom stall, small office, or closet.
  • Tolerate minor exposure to chemical fumes and contact used in custodial work or painting up to six hours a day.
  • Bend, twist, turn, pull and stretch up to seven and one-half hours as required in cleaning and dusting windows, desks, counter tops, tables and legs, chairs and legs, door frames, urinal stools, mirrors, stairs, overhead vents, light fixtures, and walls.
  • Empty trash bags/containers weighing up to 40 pounds and lift them up to 48 inches. Life 40-pound bucket of water up to 36 inches high and/or move it up to 6 feet.
  • May wear respirator for up to four hours. Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability To develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and other employees.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to drive city vehicle for sample delivery and pick up.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Six months of experience performing custodial maintenance work which includes the operation and maintenance of motorized custodial equipment.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.  

Preferred Experience and Training
  • Two (2) years of experience performing custodial or janitorial work in a water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, utility facility, manufacturing facility, industrial facility, government building, healthcare facility, educational facility, or multi-building campus.


Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal records check.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
