About Us

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Recruitment Range: $96,513 - $115,937

This position has primary responsibility for highly advanced legal work, and independently represents and advises the various divisions and commissions of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (“Agriculture”), in particular the Structural Pest Control and Pesticide Division and the Animal Welfare Section of the Veterinary Division. This position also independently represents Agriculture on novel and developing issues and in complex litigation when Agriculture is sued in State or Federal court. The position must master highly technical and scientific issues related to pesticide and other issues in order to successfully represent Agriculture. The position performs advanced legal work in the above-referenced areas, and the advanced nature of the work is continuous and complex. This position also performs advanced and complex litigation for the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, either independently or as a lead on a team of several attorneys.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management Preferences:

• Extensive civil litigation experience, preferably including first-chair trial experience in state and/or federal court. Demonstrated ability to independently manage cases from discovery through trial and appeal is strongly preferred.
• Mentorship and collaboration. Proven ability to mentor junior attorneys and work collaboratively as part of a litigation team, including providing direction to paralegals and support staff.
• Administrative and regulatory litigation experience. Familiarity with proceedings before the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings or comparable administrative tribunals, particularly involving enforcement actions or challenges to agency decisions.
• Strong research, writing, and appellate skills. Excellent legal research and brief-writing ability, with appellate or oral argument experience a plus.

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and four years of progressively responsible professional legal experience. NOTE: GS 114-2 and 114-6 make it the duty of the Attorney General of NC to represent the State of North Carolina in all litigation unless another statute specifically states otherwise.
