Job Description

Campus Energy, Utilities and Operations (CEUO) has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic II to join our team. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor II, this position supports the University of Washington Environmental Controls Group by performing skilled mechanical and trades work related to the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of buildings, facilities, machinery, and equipment. The Maintenance Mechanic II independently troubleshoots and completes routine corrective and preventive maintenance assignments, ensuring the reliable operation of mechanical systems and equipment. The role requires a strong working knowledge of multiple skilled trades, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and machining, as well as the ability to perform preventive maintenance and repairs across a variety of building and facility systems.

 

Key responsibilities

Mechanical Maintenance, Inspection & Repair (70%)

• Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, adjustments, and repairs on mechanical systems and equipment, including cooling towers, and water treatment systems.
• Perform journey-level machinery mechanic work, including the repair and replacement of chemical feed systems and related components on cooling towers.
• Perform seasonal cooling-tower startup, shutdown, cleaning, and winterization activities.
• Operate power tools and maintenance equipment in a safe and skilled manner.

 

Water Treatment, System Support & Documentation (20%)

• Report equipment conditions, repairs, and replacement needs using computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) software.
• Perform semi-skilled work in multiple trades, including electrical and plumbing systems.
• Operate forklifts, scissor lifts, UW vehicles, and other equipment to support maintenance, repair, and installation activities.
• Load, unload, transport, and stage tools, equipment, materials, and supplies for assigned projects.

 

Safety, Customer Service & Other Duties  (10%)

• Coordinate and communicate with supervisors, other trades, UW Facilities shops, and campus stakeholders regarding work status, project needs, and operational requirements.
• Assist, guide, and may provide instruction to semi-skilled personnel and collaborate with journey-level trades staff.
• Comply with all applicable safety regulations, UW policies, CEUO procedures, SDS (Safety Data Sheets) requirements, HRCs (Hazard Review Checklists), and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) standards while maintaining a safe work environment.
• Support CEUO's mission through customer service, participation in meetings, training, process improvement initiatives, continuous improvement efforts, and the performance of other assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department.

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-journey status in a union; OR four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

 

Additional Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Washington State driver license.
• May be required to accept variable work shift.
• Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
• Ability to safely lift, carry, and move materials and equipment may be required.
• Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.
• Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
• Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of water chemistry, as it relates to HVAC cooling and heating systems in a commercial or institutional environment.
• Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.
• Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$59,844.00 annual

$79,452.00 annual
