Assistant Branch Lead

We are partnering with a well-established accounting firm in South Auckland to find an Assistant Branch Lead to join their close-knit and high-performing team.

About the role

As an Assistant Branch Lead, you will play a pivotal role in the day-to-day success of the branch, working alongside the General Manager to support clients, workflow, team capability and business performance. Your core responsibilities will include delivering high-quality compliance work across a diverse client base, while increasingly identifying opportunities to provide clients with broader business and advisory support. You will have the opportunity to develop your BAS capability across areas such as management reporting, cash flow analysis, budgeting and business performance advice, with strong training and support available. The role will also see you mentoring junior team members, contributing to workflow and branch operations, and helping create a positive, high-performing team environment.

Key responsibilities:

• Preparing and reviewing financial statements, tax returns and GST
• Managing a portfolio of diverse clients and building strong relationships
• Providing practical accounting and commercial advice
• Developing your Business Advisory Services capability
• Identifying opportunities to expand clients beyond traditional compliance services
• Supporting client meetings and relationship management
• Mentoring and guiding junior and intermediate accountants
• Supporting workflow, deadlines and branch operations
• Contributing to business growth and client retention
• Identifying opportunities to improve processes and efficiency
• Working collaboratively with the wider accounting team

About you:

We are looking for a senior accountant who can bring strong technical capability while also demonstrating the interpersonal and commercial skills needed to step into a broader role.

Requirements:

• Several years’ experience within a New Zealand accounting firm at the senior accounting level
• Strong compliance accounting experience
• Statutory accounting qualifications - desirable 
• Experience preparing and/or reviewing financial statements, GST and tax returns
• An understanding of Business Advisory Services, or a genuine desire to develop in this area
• Strong client relationship and communication skills
• Experience mentoring, reviewing or supporting less experienced accountants
• A commercially minded approach and an interest in understanding the wider needs of your clients
• The confidence to take ownership and operate at a senior level
• A collaborative, team-focused attitude
