The Chemours Titanium Technologies Product Development Organization located at the Chemours Discovery Hub in Newark, DE has an Associate Scientist position available for an extrusion scientist focused on polymer processing and extrusion technology.

Our extrusion scientists support research and development activities ranging from hands-on polymer processing and extrusion trials to equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, and process improvement. This is a key role within the Company and the Technology function. This position will report to the Pigment Technology team Supervisor.

For this role, practical knowledge of extrusion equipment, polymer processing, materials handling, and safe laboratory operations is critical in order to collaborate successfully with R&D scientists, engineers, and technicians while conducting extrusion trials, collecting data, maintaining equipment, and supporting development of new titanium dioxide and adjacent material applications in plastics.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • This extrusion scientist will support product development efforts in the Titanium Technologies business within plastics and polymer processing technology spaces

  • The scientist will operate lab-scale and pilot-scale extrusion equipment, including set-up, start-up, steady-state operation, shutdown, and cleaning of extrusion systems.

  • The candidate will prepare polymer, pigment, and additive formulations for extrusion trials and conduct hands-on processing of materials to support current and new market opportunities.

  • The candidate will maintain extrusion equipment through routine inspection, cleaning, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and coordination of repairs as needed.

  • The successful candidate will carry out extrusion experiments safely, collect and organize process and material performance data, document observations, and communicate results to project teams.

  • This assignment includes supporting scale-up, process optimization, and application testing of materials in relevant polymer systems.

  • The successful candidate will apply working knowledge of polymer processing principles, extrusion variables, equipment limitations, and safety requirements to support effective experimentation and equipment reliability.

The following is required for this role:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least 10 years of relevant experience in extrusion, polymer processing, injection molding or film fabrication; OR a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Polymer Science, Plastics Engineering, or a related field with at least 3 years of relevant experience

  • Hands-on experience operating, setting up, cleaning, troubleshooting, and maintaining extrusion equipment

  • Demonstration of strong collaborative skills

  • Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret extrusion process data and material performance results to determine next steps

  • Working knowledge of polymer processing fundamentals, including extrusion temperature profiles, screw speed, feed rate, residence time, torque, pressure, pelletizing, and material handling considerations

  • Ability to conduct work in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, contribute to SOPs and hazard reviews, and follow procedures for safe operation of extrusion and laboratory equipment

  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical or process-related issues, identify options to restore equipment operation, and perform or coordinate routine maintenance activities
