Job Summary

The Wentworth-Douglass Orthopedics team provides expert care in various subspecialties including hand and upper extremities, spine, sports medicine, total joint, trauma, and foot and ankle. Our multidisciplinary team is made up of physicians and musculoskeletal providers who collaborate closely using an integrated care model to design personalized treatment plans for each patient. From athletic injuries to degenerative conditions, our goal is to restore and maintain comfort and function for all patients. We work closely with physiatrists, interventional pain specialists, and our physical and occupational therapists to provide comprehensive assessments, so you can regain mobility and independence.

We are seeking a full-time Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Orthopedics team and support our Foot & Ankle surgeon. This position is scheduled Monday through Friday, with rotating weekend and holiday coverage as needed. Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) work under the clinical supervision of the Medical Director and the operational direction of the Practice Manager.
The PA will have a role in the clinic setting and serve as first assist for Foot & Ankle surgical procedures, with potential exposure to additional orthopedic cases at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. The primary location for patient care will be in our orthopedic clinic located at 7 Marsh Brook Drive in Somersworth, NH and possible future clinic coverage in our Portsmouth, NH location.

Responsibilities
• Obtain and document comprehensive orthopedic histories and physical examinations.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including splint, brace, and cast application/removal; wound care and debridement; suturing and suture removal; joint injections; and joint aspirations.
• Educate, counsel, and support patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and recovery.
• Order and interpret diagnostic testing, including X-rays, MRIs, and other imaging studies.
• Develop, coordinate, and manage treatment plans and follow-up care.
• Communicate test results and ongoing treatment recommendations to patients.
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals, making referrals to specialty services as appropriate.
• Document patient encounters, treatment plans, and progress notes, and enter orders in Epic in accordance with Medical Staff policies.
• Review patient cases with the on-call physician as needed.
• Manage patient messages, prescription requests, and telephone inquiries.
• Serve as first assist in the operating room.
• Provide coverage for the Orthopedic Walk-In Clinic as needed.

This role offers a unique opportunity to combine surgical first-assist experience with independent outpatient orthopedic practice, working closely with a dedicated Foot & Ankle surgeon while caring for a diverse orthopedic patient population.


Summary

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. May also perform additional duties, such as precepting a small group of learners.

Essential Functions
-Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
-Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
-Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
-Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
-Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
-Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
-Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
