Description

Plays a vital role in accurate patient records and reimbursement by reviewing every patient encounter and assigning the appropriate ICD-9-CM and/or ICD-10-CM and CPT codes, as well as ICD-10-PCS codes for all inpatient hospital encounters.

Requirements

Education, Training or Certifications Required:

1. Minimum -- High School or GED with certificate of medical terminology training and/or Anatomy and Physiology.
2. Preferred -- AHIMA certification as CCS, or AHIMA registration as RHIT or RHIA.

Experience Required:

1. Minimum --1-3 years coding experience in an acute care setting.
2. Preferred -- 5+ years coding experience in acute care facility with specialty units.

Cognitive Requirements:

1. Emotional maturity and good people skills required.
2. Must possess analytical and problem solving skills.

Physical Demands:

1. Visual concentration due to use of VDT (approximately 60-75% of the time).
2. Extended periods of sitting.

Environment:

1. Noisy environment -- (slave printers x 8).
2. Extreme heat year-round (department located above live steam line running to mechanical room).
