Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Azure Service Bus / Messaging Platform Engineer with a strong background in enterprise messaging, cloud middleware, and infrastructure automation to join a small, high-impact middleware team supporting the client. The successful candidate will work closely with application, architecture, security, and operations teams to implement and harden Azure Service Bus Geo-Replication for high availability and disaster recovery, build out Terraform infrastructure-as-code coverage, and improve Azure cost management practices.
This role is ideal for a proactive, hands-on engineer who is comfortable owning platform-specific messaging resiliency work independently while also contributing to the technical leadership and mentoring of a small team. This is an incremental addition to the team, not a backfill, and the person in this seat will be expected to both execute independently and help elevate the group's technical depth.
Location: Remote (US-based; must work PST)
Contract Length: [12 months, possible extension
Pay: W2 $60-$67 / 1099: $70-74
- Design, build, and support enterprise messaging solutions using Azure Service Bus Premium.
- Implement and operationalize Azure Service Bus Geo-Replication across Azure regions, working toward a target failover recovery time of under 5 minutes.
- Engineer and support queues, topics, subscriptions, dead letter queues (DLQ), message replay/recovery, retry strategies, duplicate detection/handling, sessions, message ordering, idempotency, and TTL/expiration.
- Develop and maintain Terraform infrastructure and reusable modules for messaging infrastructure.
- Automate deployment, configuration, validation, and failover/failback activities using Python, PowerShell, and Azure CLI.
- Develop and maintain DR run books; participate in scheduled DR/resiliency testing and failover/failback exercises as an accountable contributor (not sole owner).
- Monitor and troubleshoot queue/topic depth, dead-letter activity, delivery failures, latency, throttling, capacity, and replication health.
- Partner with application, architecture, security, and operations teams on messaging integration.
- Contribute to improving Azure cost visibility and governance practices.
- Support and help mentor an existing team member, contributing to the technical leadership of the broader team.
- 7+ years of cloud, middleware, integration, or enterprise messaging engineering experience.
- Advanced, hands-on Terraform experience, including module authorship (not limited to consuming existing modules) — non-negotiable.
- Strong hands-on Microsoft Azure and Azure Service Bus experience.
- Scripting/automation experience with Python and/or PowerShell.
- Solid understanding of enterprise messaging concepts: queues, topics, subscriptions, DLQs, replay/recovery, retries, duplicate handling, sessions, ordering, and idempotency.
- Working knowledge of HA/DR fundamentals, including RTO/RPO, failover/failback, business continuity, and resiliency testing, with the ability to clearly describe a DR/failover exercise personally executed.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a small team's technical leadership and mentoring.
Preferred
- Hands-on experience implementing Azure Service Bus Geo-Replication or comparable multi-region messaging resiliency.
- Awareness of platform-level replication constraints (e.g., payload-size limits) and how to design around them.
- Experience with legacy enterprise messaging platforms (e.g., IBM MQ, TIBCO).
- Experience with Dynatrace, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or comparable observability tooling.
