About the Team and Role
eBay’s Cloud Security Engineering team is building the next generation of identity and access platforms that secure one of the world’s largest commerce ecosystems.
Our distributed systems power millions of users, services, and transactions every day and are foundational to eBay’s trust, security, and reliability. As a Software Engineer – Distributed Systems, you’ll help design and build cloud-scale directory services, authorization platforms, and policy engines that enable secure, real-time access decisions across human and non-human identities.
We’re looking for engineers with a strong foundation in distributed systems and a passion for learning. You embrace an AI-first engineering mindset, using AI to accelerate development, improve software quality, automate repetitive tasks, and continuously enhance your engineering skills. Working alongside experienced engineers, you’ll help modernize identity platforms while growing your expertise in cloud-native technologies and large-scale distributed systems.
What You’ll Accomplish
- Develop and enhance cloud-scale directory services that manage identities, entitlements, and relationships across eBay’s global platform.
- Build scalable APIs, microservices, and authorization services that enable secure, low-latency access decisions.
- Contribute to policy engines supporting fine-grained authorization models such as RBAC, ABAC, and PBAC.
- Write high-quality, well-tested, production-ready code using modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD and observability.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools throughout the software development lifecycle to improve coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and productivity.
- Participate in troubleshooting production issues, identifying root causes, and improving service reliability.
- Collaborate with Identity, Platform, Security, and Infrastructure teams to deliver secure, scalable solutions.
- Continuously identify opportunities to automate engineering tasks and improve developer productivity through responsible AI adoption.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of experience developing backend or distributed systems.
- Experience building applications or microservices using Java, Go, Python, or similar programming languages.
- Solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, including distributed systems, networking, operating systems, data structures, and algorithms.
- Experience with SQL, NoSQL, or other modern data storage technologies.
- Familiarity with cloud-native development, Kubernetes, containers, or modern cloud platforms.
- Basic understanding of identity and authorization concepts such as RBAC, ABAC, IAM, LDAP, or policy-based access control.
- Experience using AI-powered engineering tools to improve software development, testing, documentation, debugging, and overall engineering productivity.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills with a desire to continuously learn and grow.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration.
- Familiarity with service meshes (Istio, Envoy) or cloud-native networking.
- Exposure to policy engines such as OPA or Cedar.
- Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
- Knowledge of cloud security, Zero Trust, or identity platforms.
What We’re Looking For
You’re an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, learning new technologies, and building reliable software that operates at scale. You embrace AI as an essential part of modern software engineering—using it to improve productivity, automate routine tasks, strengthen code quality, and accelerate learning. You take ownership of your work, collaborate effectively with your teammates, and continuously seek opportunities to improve both yourself and the systems you build.
