Description
Systems Specialist II
The Department of Protein Sciences at Genentech is seeking a talented, high-spirited automation specialist to join a world-class team focused on generating target proteins that support small- and large-molecule drug discovery.
This highly collaborative role sits at the interface of protein expression, cell engineering, research biology, and other groups. You will work closely with scientists and group leaders across and beyond the Drug Discovery organization to enhance protein production, nucleic acid library generation, cell line development, and the exploration of new therapeutic modalities.
This position is based in South San Francisco, on site.
The Opportunity
Engage closely with scientists and automation specialists to implement and support automated workflows for molecular biology, cell culture, purification, screening, and characterization.
Operate and troubleshoot key instruments, integrated systems, and automated workflows.
Train and provide ongoing support to end users of automated workflows in the department, helping drive adoption and best practices.
Perform routine precision/accuracy assessments and coordinate instrument maintenance as needed.
Identify and drive improvements to increase throughput, robustness, and operational efficiency.
Who You Are (Required)
Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Biology or a closely related field (e.g., Biochemistry, Engineering) and a minimum of 2-4 years of related work experience, or
Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related field (e.g., Biochemistry, Engineering) and 1-2 years of related work experience.
Operational expertise in laboratory automation, programming, data management, and/or process management.
Hands-on experience programming liquid handlers such as Tecan, Hamilton, Dynamic Devices, and Agilent Bravo.
Working knowledge of scheduling/orchestration software such as Cellario (HighRes), Green Button Go (Biosero), or Revolution (UK Robotics) is highly desirable.
Knowledge of one or more scripting/programming languages (e.g., Java, C#, Python).
Experience integrating liquid handlers, robotic arms, automated incubators, plate readers, and/or plate washers into fully automated systems.
Experience integrating laboratory equipment with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues in automated processes.
A mindset for guiding and supporting users to enable broader adoption of automation in their workflows.
Experience converting bench-top or manually conducted assays/protocols into robust, fully automated routines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of basic scientific principles in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and/or protein engineering is a plus.
Meticulous, patient, and organized, with excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with diverse scientific and technical stakeholders.
Motivated and self-directed, with the ability to complete projects in a highly collaborative, team-oriented setting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is 91 900,00 - 170 700,00 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
