Role Summary:
Provides hands-on technical and operational leadership for safe, compliant, reliable, and continuously improving EP laboratory execution in a 24/7 R&D environment. The Lab Technologist integrates application optimization, laboratory operations, and daily operational excellence by supporting equipment and method readiness, experiment execution, shift coordination, SOP discipline, data quality, troubleshooting, materials readiness, and performance improvement.
This role serves as a key link between technicians, Process Specialists, scientists, engineers, project owners, and laboratory leadership. It helps translate technical priorities into disciplined daily execution, strengthens measurement integrity and documentation quality, drives practical improvements in throughput and reliability, and reinforces safety, quality, 5S+1, and operational standards across routine lab activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Application Optimization & Technology Support
- Support assigned laboratory technologies, equipment platforms, analytical methods, recipes, and process capabilities to enable reliable R&D execution.
- Assist with equipment qualification, method validation, recipe readiness, correlation activity, and technical documentation needed for routine use or technology transfer.
- Monitor critical process parameters, equipment health, data trends, measurement quality, and emerging technical risks; escalate gaps with clear facts and recommendations.
- Contribute to SOPs, troubleshooting guides, training materials, operating windows, best practices, and technical standards for assigned lab processes.
Workforce Coverage & Shift Continuity
- Confirm attendance, arrange immediate coverage for absences, and communicate staffing risks to the Laboratory Operations Lead.
- Assign work according to technician qualifications, workload balance, experiment priorities, equipment availability, and shift coverage needs.
- Conduct structured shift handovers covering work status, deviations, safety concerns, equipment conditions, material readiness, and pending actions.
- Maintain continuity across day, evening, and night shifts by following up on open items and escalating unresolved issues appropriately.
- Ensure shift information is communicated clearly, consistently, and in time for the next shift to act without delay.
Laboratory Execution & Operational Troubleshooting
- Ensure experiments, inspections, characterization activities, and routine work are executed according to approved schedules, SOPs, work instructions, and laboratory priorities.
- Provide first-line response to workflow, equipment, quality, and execution issues using established troubleshooting guides and approved escalation paths.
- Contain immediate execution risk, document symptoms and actions taken, and escalate recurring or unresolved technical issues to the appropriate Process Specialist and laboratory leadership.
- Coordinate routine equipment checks, cleaning, basic maintenance, calibration readiness, service requests, and resource scheduling to support reliable laboratory execution.
SOP Discipline, Coaching & Operational Reporting
- Verify that technicians and contractors are qualified for assigned tasks and follow approved SOPs, safety controls, and documentation requirements.
- Provide on-shift coaching, reinforce work discipline, and identify training, qualification, or capability gaps for follow-up.
- Review experiment records, equipment logs, data completeness, and shift reports before handover to improve execution discipline and traceability.
- Report throughput, delays, deviations, resource constraints, incidents, and required follow-up actions to support timely leadership decisions.
Safety Leadership, Materials & Inventory Control
- Act as the frontline safety leader during the assigned shift and pause or stop work when unsafe conditions, unapproved practices, or unacceptable risk are identified.
- Ensure compliant chemical handling, waste management, PPE use, emergency readiness, documentation accuracy, and 5S+1 practices.
- Monitor critical materials, samples, consumables, and inventory; coordinate replenishment and escalate shortages that may affect shift execution.
- Support incident response, initial fact collection, corrective action follow-up, and timely communication to laboratory leadership.
Operational Excellence in Daily Lab Operations
- Identify daily lab operation bottlenecks and implement practical improvements within approved procedures, safety controls, and operational standards.
- Use operational data, shift performance metrics, equipment status, inventory signals, and workflow observations to improve throughput, turnaround time, resource utilization, and execution reliability.
- Drive daily management practices such as visual management, 5S+1, standard work, escalation discipline, follow-up tracking, and structured handover routines.
- Maintain accurate performance metrics, shift reports, escalation records, equipment readiness updates, material status, and improvement action trackers.
- Partner with Process Specialists, scientists, engineers, technicians, contractors, and project owners to turn technical priorities into stable, repeatable, and efficient daily execution.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience in laboratory operations, process development, applied R&D, analytical characterization, manufacturing support, technical services, or related environments requiring disciplined execution and documentation.
- Experience coordinating personnel, work priorities, resources, and operational activities in a shift-based, high-throughput, or time-sensitive laboratory setting.
- Working knowledge of SOP execution, laboratory safety, chemical handling, basic equipment troubleshooting, calibration readiness, and records control.
- Working understanding of experimental execution, data integrity, technical documentation, equipment qualification, method readiness, and basic troubleshooting in a technical laboratory environment.
- Strong communication, coaching, prioritization, organization, and real-time problem-solving skills.
- Ability to make sound operational decisions under changing priorities, contain immediate risks, and escalate issues with clear facts and recommended next steps.
- Willingness and ability to support assigned shift schedules in a 24/7 laboratory operation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in semiconductor, electroplating, electrochemistry, materials analysis, advanced packaging, or advanced manufacturing laboratory environments.
- Previous experience as a senior technician, team coordinator, shift lead, frontline supervisor, or laboratory operations coordinator.
- Experience supporting equipment qualification, method development, recipe readiness, technology transfer, or application optimization activities.
- Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, 5S+1, visual management, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience using productivity, quality, equipment readiness, inventory, staffing, data quality, and operational performance metrics to drive daily execution improvement.
- Experience coordinating high-throughput R&D execution, experiment scheduling, cross-shift handover systems, sample flow control, and resource allocation.
- Experience supporting technician onboarding, qualification tracking, skill matrix development, and operational discipline in a technical laboratory environment.
Success Measures
- Sustained safe, compliant, and audit-ready execution throughout assigned shifts.
- Effective attendance coverage, staffing deployment, workload allocation, and shift continuity.
- On-time completion of planned experiments, inspections, characterization activities, and routine work with complete and accurate records.
- Clear, timely, and actionable shift handovers, operational reports, escalation records, and follow-up tracking.
- Effective first-line troubleshooting, issue containment, escalation quality, and closure support.
- Improved equipment readiness, material availability, sample flow, inventory accuracy, and resource utilization, as reflected in shift-level performance metrics.
- Documented progress in technician qualification, coaching effectiveness, SOP adherence, and operational discipline.
- Measurable improvement in laboratory throughput, turnaround time, execution reliability, and cross-shift operational continuity.
