He angitūtanga | About the role 

We have three roles available at Tōtaranui Campground in Abel Tasman National Park: two Campground Ranger positions and one Campground Office Ranger position. As a Campground Ranger or Campground Office Ranger, you will play a key role in delivering exceptional visitor experiences while helping to protect and maintain this iconic destination. The roles focus on a combination of customer service, visitor support, and facility maintenance, ensuring visitors enjoy a safe, welcoming, and memorable stay. 

Based at the Department’s busiest campground in a stunning coastal environment, you will be responsible for maintaining campground facilities, supporting conservation outcomes, and providing high-quality information and assistance to visitors. The Campground Office Ranger role also has a stronger administrative and front-of-house focus, assisting with bookings, enquiries, and day-to-day campground operations 

Your work will include: 

Campground Rangers 

  • Cleaning and maintaining campground facilities, including amenity blocks and visitor areas 

  • Maintaining water supply infrastructure and supporting asset upkeep 

  • Undertaking track and grounds maintenance 

  • Operating tools and machinery such as scrub cutters, mowers, and herbicide equipment 

  • Assisting with visitor safety and responding to emergencies as required 

  • Supporting conservation outcomes through practical field-based work 

Campground Office Ranger 

  • Processing bookings and managing campground administration 

  • Providing visitors with information, local knowledge, and safety advice 

  • Responding to enquiries in person, by phone, and online 

  • Supporting day-to-day campground operations and visitor management 

  • Assisting with facility checks and general campground maintenance as needed 

  • Helping ensure a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable experience for all visitors 

 

All roles contribute to the successful operation of the Department's busiest campground, delivering excellent customer service while helping protect the unique natural and cultural values of the Abel Tasman National Park.

If you have some of the following, we'd love to hear from you: 

  • Good communication skills and the ability to relate well to a diverse range of people. 

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team 

  • Experience in cleaning facilities 

  • Strong customer service skills 

  • Confidence engaging with a wide range of visitors and stakeholders 

  • Understanding of Māori cultural perspectives 

  • Physical fitness is required 

  • Ability to use VHF radio systems and workplace technology 

  • Ability to live and work in an isolated environment 

  • Strong commitment to health and safety practices 

  • Full New Zealand driver’s licence
