Senior Engineer, Customer Access Studies

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. Job Description

The AESO is the sole provider of system access service on Alberta's transmission system, and the Customer Grid Access team plays a critical role in fulfilling this mandate. Through the AESO's Connection Process, the Customer Access Studies (CAS) team performs and reviews project interconnection engineering studies that support the reliable integration of new generation, load, and transmission-connected projects into Alberta's power system.

Reporting to the Manager, Customer Access Studies, the Senior Engineer is responsible for running interconnection engineering studies and developing engineering solutions to project challenges that support customer connection projects. You will provide technical decision-making, engineering assessments, documentation, and technical regulatory support to facilitate System Access Service Requests to the AIES. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, you will contribute to technical deliverables, support project execution through the AESO Connection Process, and provide guidance to Engineers and Engineers-in-Training.

What You'll Do

• Prepare Engineering Study Scope documents for projects within the assigned Cluster (regional area) in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

• Conduct power flow, stability, and short circuit studies, as well as advanced power system analysis studies for project interconnection using PSS/E software.

• Determine options or alternative solutions for connecting Market Participants to the Alberta transmission network and justify the preferred alternative based on technical, economic, and impact factors.

• Prepare and review Single Line diagrams, Engineering Connection Assessments, Connection Proposals, and supporting documentation for connection projects.

• Review and accept Distribution Deficiency Reports and analyze system constraints identified through engineering studies.

• Collaborate with AESO Operations, Planning, Markets, Project Engineering, Grid Analytics, and Standards & Modeling teams to develop mitigation plans, forecasts, and models that support customer access studies and connection projects.

• Maintain technical project documentation and effective communication with Market Participants to resolve technical issues.

• Provide technical leadership, engineering expertise, and support for customer connection projects through the AESO Connection Process.

What You’ll Bring to Us

• B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering; a post-graduate degree in Electrical Power Systems is considered an asset.

• Registered with or eligible for registration with APEGA (P.Eng.).

• Approximately 8-10 years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry, including at least five years of exposure to power systems and distribution planning or operations.

• Proficiency in PSS/E software and Python.

• Experience conducting power flow, stability, and short circuit studies, as well as advanced power system analysis.

• Strong understanding of transmission and distribution system planning, customer interconnections, and utility operations.

• Distribution system planning and detailed design expertise is considered an asset.
