*Expected Starting Pay Range

$141,232.00 - $183,601.60

Due to a recent internal promotion, Cincinnati Children's is seeking a Director of Data Engineering to lead the development, implementation, support, and modernization of our enterprise analytic data environment. This leader will oversee critical capabilities including data warehouses and data lakes, data quality, master and metadata management, data products, ETL, graph databases and data fabric capabilities, and the data infrastructure supporting AI and agentic workflows.

 

The Director will lead Architects, DW Analysts, and Data Engineers while executing a multi-year roadmap for modern data management infrastructure and managing key vendor relationships. This highly collaborative role will partner across AI/Advanced Analytics, Business Intelligence, Platforms, Database Administration, research informatics, and research data teams to advance a cohesive enterprise data and analytics strategy.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

People Planning/Development - Creates a vision and roadmap for the team that provides direction and alignment of priorities with the tactical and strategic objectives of the department and organization.

  • Delegate responsibilities to reporting personnel, establish clear lines of responsibility and accountability.

  • Elevates team members thinking and understanding of the field by infusing best practice knowledge into the work.

  • Leads the selection, development, mentoring and coaching of direct and indirect reports.

  • Ensure that job requirements and goals for each position are clear to employees and that Medical Center initiatives, priorities, standards, and policies are effectively communicated and understood.

 

Department Leadership - Propose, research, and manage the development, implementation and assessment of long and short term technology goals and objectives in collaboration with department leadership.

  • Operationalize, implement and monitor assigned initiatives.

  • Drive execution of the assigned projects and project components.

  • Acts together with management as a champion for positive organizational culture and quality of work life.

System Design and Strategy - Lead the development, design and implementation of systems and technology that meet workforce and patient care needs, are cost effective and consistent with best practice.

  • Ensure development and maintenance of policies and practices in support of processes.

  • Develop and deliver effective communications and training to users.

  • Consult with staff and managers and provide guidance.

  • Provide oversight for relevant vendor relationships, RFPs and vendor selections.

 

Financial Management - In collaboration with leadership, develop, implement and evaluate the department's annual and capital budget to achieve the organizational and departmental objectives;

  • Recommend a salary budget supporting the required FTE's to meet departmental needs;

  • monitor expense;

  • evaluate variances, determine underlying causes and identify, present, and implement proposed solutions;

  • accountable for compliance with organizational financial policies and procedures.

 

Customer focus - Provide leadership for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of specific projects ensuring consistency with organizational strategy, commitments and goals.

  • Define project scope, goals, deliverables and resource requirements.

  • Develop project plans resource allocation, and timeline.

  • Manage the day-to-day operational aspects of a project and scope.

  • Direct assigned project team ensuring effective utilization of resources.

  • Monitor project deliverables and report on progress of the project to all stakeholders.

  • Provide input on departmental strategy and planning with focus on areas of functional responsibility.

  • Ensure functional area(s) provide outstanding end-user support, including ongoing monitoring of Service Level Attainment for incident management and collaboration with other functional areas to ensure customer-centered incident management and collaboration with other functional areas to ensure customer centered incident management and support.

  • Spends at least 80% of time managing the work of 2+ others.

  • Role available in centralized functions only.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline
