IndieWire: Film and Media Reporter

IndieWire is seeking a dynamic Film and Media Reporter for its Los Angeles office reporting to the Editor-in-Chief. This is a growth role — a deliberate expansion in responsibility and editorial reach — and we're looking for a journalist who brings energy, curiosity, and ambition to one of the most exciting beats in entertainment media. You'll cover the full spectrum: independent filmmakers, actors, craftspeople, and indie distributors alongside major studios and the largest media companies in the world.

We're the voice of creative independence, and you should have a working knowledge of what that means — how independent film and other content has evolved in tandem with the marketplace. This isn't a job built on press junkets and glossy features; it's an opportunity to investigate the film industry with the best tools that journalism allows.

IndieWire values in-person collaboration and team cohesion, employees work onsite 4 days a week and 1 day remotely with a focus on maintaining a vibrant and inclusive culture.

Key Responsibilities

• Cover independent filmmakers, actors, craftspeople, and indie distributors, as well as major studios and media companies, with range, authority, and IndieWire's signature voice
• Monitor the daily news cycle and move quickly on breaking stories, developing fresh angles and bounce pieces on the biggest stories of the day
• Generate original story ideas and report original, sharp, and distinct stories — from breaking news to enterprise features, profiles, and analysis
• Write compelling profiles of filmmakers, talent, and industry figures that go beyond the surface
• Contribute reviews and critical coverage as needed, bringing a point of view grounded in deep film knowledge
• Develop and execute strategies for breaking news and exclusives; cultivate a strong network of sources across the industry ecosystem
• Craft compelling web headlines and optimize stories for search, applying SEO best practices throughout the publishing process
• Maintain an active, engaged presence on social media, regularly sharing and amplifying IndieWire's coverage
• Collaborate with editors and teammates on both coasts to develop stories and share intelligence
• Be willing to work outside standard business hours to cover film festivals, events, and breaking developments

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of two years of experience writing for a news organization covering film, entertainment, or media
• Proven ability to work at speed in a breaking-news environment while maintaining accuracy and editorial standards
• Strong writing skills across news, features, profiles, and analysis — with a clear, confident voice
• Demonstrated experience covering film, independent cinema, or the broader media landscape
• Fluency in SEO best practices and the ability to craft headlines optimized for web audiences
• Active and savvy presence on social media platforms relevant to entertainment journalism
• Self-starter with the ability to generate original ideas and develop source networks independently

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience writing film reviews and critical analysis
• Existing relationships with publicists, agents, filmmakers, and studio or distributor contacts
• Familiarity with digital analytics tools and how traffic data informs editorial strategy
• Experience covering film festivals (Sundance, Cannes, TIFF, SXSW, etc.)
• Knowledge of the indie distribution landscape and how streaming has reshaped film economics

A good faith estimate of the salary range is $70,500 - $75,000 upon hire. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role.
