Description
We're hiring a Tooling Engineer (Lahore - Night Shift) - Onsite
About the Company:
A leading engineering consulting company serving North American clients in the automotive industry. Our clients are automotive suppliers that manufacture sheet metal stamped and assembled components for major vehicle manufacturers such as Honda, Ford, Toyota, and others.
Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Tooling Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and improvement of progressive stamping dies, welding and fabrication fixtures, assembly jigs, checking fixtures, and related production tooling for automotive and heavy manufacturing applications. This role requires strong 3D CAD capability, practical knowledge of tooling and manufacturing processes, GD&T, and problem-solving abilities, along with strong written and verbal communication skills in English to collaborate with cross-functional teams and support our North American-based clients.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Stamping Tooling - Automotive:
Develop progressive stamping strip layouts for automotive sheet-metal components, considering part geometry, forming requirements, material flow, and production feasibility.
Plan station sequencing, nesting, material utilization, carrier strips, scrap webs, pilot positioning, and progression through cutting and forming operations.
Perform basic engineering calculations including tonnage, cutting and forming forces, center of pressure, and die balance.
Design and detail punches, die blocks, strippers, pads, guides, pilots, retainers, and other progressive die components.
Support die tryout and troubleshooting activities, including spring-back correction, clearance adjustments, dimensional improvements, and production-related tooling issues.
2. Welding & Assembly Tooling - Automotive:
Design spot and MIG welding fixtures, assembly jigs, checking fixtures, and gauges for stamped automotive components and assemblies.
Develop robust locating schemes using component datums, RPS principles, net pads, locating pins, and pin-and-slot arrangements.
Design mechanical and pneumatic locating and clamping systems while considering part loading and unloading, weld gun access, weld sequence, operator ergonomics, and maintainability.
Apply GD&T and dimensional requirements to ensure repeatable part location,
orientation, and assembly accuracy.
Support fixture tryout, buy-off, first-article inspection, dimensional validation, and required design modifications.
3. Fabrication & Machining Tooling - Heavy Machinery:
Design weld fixtures, assembly jigs, and machining fixtures for large fabricated structures such as frames, booms, buckets, tanks, and agricultural implements.
Develop rigid tooling solutions for large and heavy weldments while considering welding distortion, pre-camber, weld sequence, thermal effects, and dimensional stability.
Incorporate positioners, crane access, lifting and handling requirements, operator access, and safe loading and unloading into tooling designs.
Develop practical, modular, and adjustable tooling for high-mix, low-volume fabrication environments.
4. Tooling Design & Documentation:
Develop complete 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings for dies, fixtures, jigs, gauges, and related tooling components.
Apply GD&T, fits, tolerances, and basic tolerance stack-up principles to achieve
dimensional accuracy and repeatability.
Select appropriate standard tooling components, locating devices, clamps, cylinders, fasteners, and commercially available components where applicable.
Maintain accurate tooling documentation and incorporate revisions based try out, manufacturing, quality, and production feedback.
5. Tooling Optimization & Continuous Improvement:
Review existing tooling and identify opportunities to improve cycle time, ergonomics, accessibility, reliability, maintainability, quality, and manufacturing cost.
Troubleshoot tooling-related production and dimensional issues, identify root causes, and develop practical corrective actions.
Support tooling standardization, cost-reduction, and continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Project Support:
Work closely with manufacturing, production, quality, maintenance, machining, welding, tool rooms, and other engineering teams throughout tooling design, tryout, and implementation.
Communicate tooling concepts, technical requirements, design changes, and project status clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
Manage multiple tooling projects and design revisions simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining a high standard of work.
Qualification & Required Competencies:
Education: DAE in Mechanical or Tool & Die Making from a recognized board; or B.Tech / BS / BE/ BSc in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience: 2-4 years of relevant experience in tooling design, fixture design, die design, fabrication, automotive manufacturing, or heavy machinery.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, and Fusion 360.
Strong understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T, fits, tolerances, and basic
tolerance stack-up.
Good knowledge of progressive stamping, sheet-metal forming, welding, machining, and fabrication processes.
Practical understanding of fixture locating and clamping principles, RPS/datums,
progressive die components, and tooling design fundamentals.
Familiarity with pneumatic clamping systems, standard tooling components, and tooling tryout or buy-off activities is preferred.
Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills: Ability to troubleshoot tooling, dimensional, and production issues and develop practical, manufacturable solutions.
Communication and Teamwork: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English to collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical information clearly.
Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tooling projects and design revisions while meeting deadlines and maintaining a high standard of work.
Additional Information:
- Working Hours: 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM PKT (Monday to Friday) to support our North American-based clients.
- Salary: Market Competitive
- Benefits: performance-based bonus at the end of the year
- Location: DHA phase 8, Lahore.
