Job Summary:

The Clinical Staff Leader is responsible for overseeing the delivery of safe and effective patient care within the Intensive Care Unit. This role provides leadership, staff supervision, and development, ensuring the implementation of policies, resource allocation, and adherence to quality standards. The CSL collaborates with clinical teams to maintain a positive work environment and supports patient care excellence.

Vanderbilt Clarksville Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is a 21 bed mixed medical/surgical adult ICU specialized in providing close monitoring and treatment for patients with a wide-range of diagnosis. We care for patients being treated for Cardiovascular conditions, Acute Respiratory Failure, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), Multisystem Organ System Failure, Sepsis, Drug Overdoses, Gastrointestinal Bleeds, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Hypertensive Crisis, Acute/Chronic Renal Failure, STEMI, cardiogenic shock and post heart catheterization.

Our staff is committed to provide exceptional care to our patients. Our environment is challenging, team oriented, patient and family centered. We work collaboratively to provide opportunities for nurses to grow in critical thinking, professionalism, and participate in ongoing education.

Our team consists of Intensivists, advanced practice nurses, critical care nurses, and respiratory therapists.  Daily multidisciplinary rounds include the intensivist, advanced practice nurse, ICU nurse, case manager, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, infectious disease, and a nurse leader. SWAT team consists of intensivist, advance practice nurse and charge nurse available as bedside consult. ICU charge nurse responds to codes, and RRT’s. Each shift begins with a safety huddle to look back and forward 24 hours to review safety and quality concerns.

Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH, ECG interpretation

Orientation:  12 weeks of orientation is offered based on nursing experience for nurses with at least one year of experience.

Ratios 2:1

Medical Equipment - cardiac monitors, mechanical ventilators, high flow, bipap, feeding tubes,  intravenous (IV) lines, arterial lines swan ganz catheters, foley catheters, chest tubes, alaris, pca, epidural, arctic sun, blanketrol, ultrasound, glidescope, bladder scanner, tele neurobot, ventilator, ETc02, wound vac.

Clinical Skills: Hemodynamic monitoring, invasive and noninvasive, Tracheostomy care, ventilator management protocols, cardiac arrthymias, drip titration, cardiac drips, oxygenation management, lines tubes, drains, Sheath pulls.

Professionalism:  critical thinking, collaboration, multidisciplinary rounding, bedside shift report, shared governance, certifications.

New Services: Neurosurgery

Drips:  Vasopressors, inotropes, paralytics, thrombolytic, all sedation, insulin, Blood products, TPN

Bedside procedures: Central lines, bronch, chest tube, arterial lines, paracentesis, thoracentesis, sheath pulls, cardioversions.

Specialized competencies: Intra-Aortic Balloon pump, Impella device, EVD, Swan Ganz, Arterial Line

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides clinical consultation and support to ICU staff, overseeing clinical quality efforts, including audits of protocols and surgical processes.

  • Collaborates with the ICU Manager/Director to maintain quality care standards as required by departmental protocols and regulatory agencies.

  • Ensures availability and readiness of supplies, equipment, and stock; addresses equipment needs, failures, or inventory issues to minimize disruptions in patient care.

  • Supports the professional development of staff by identifying learning needs, collaborating with the preceptor team and clinical educator, and assisting with orientation and ongoing training.

  • Assists primary physicians in performing procedures, preparing equipment, reviewing patient history, and providing first-assist support during procedures.

  • Ensures complete, accurate, and timely post-procedure data documentation in alignment with ICU and hospital protocols.

  • Supervises, trains and oversees departmental staff.

  • Schedules employees to ensure effective use of resources. Consults with Manager or Director on staffing issues.

  • Assists with and contributes to performance evaluations and goal setting.

  • Assists in managing departmental budget ensuring cost-effective operations while maintain high quality service.

  • Monitors expenditures, ensuring cost-effective delivery of services.

  • May contribute to evaluation and implementation of new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.

  • May contribute to development of departmental policies, procedures and protocols.

  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies.

  • May participate in audits, inspections and accreditation processes as applicable.

  • Follows established quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency and safety.

  • Works closely with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery.

  • Stays up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes.

  • May work in a staff role, when required. Ensures that duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting all competencies established for that job.
