Responsibilities

Position Summary The Part-Time Climbing Wall Attendant supports a safe, inclusive, and engaging climbing environment. This role supervises climbing activity, conducts participant orientations and equipment checks, provides approved belay or climbing support, enforces risk-management procedures, and delivers responsive customer service within the limits of assigned training and authorization. 

 

Essential Duties

  • Supervises climbing wall activity and maintains active awareness of participants, equipment, and environmental conditions
  • Conducts required participant orientations, eligibility checks, and safety briefings using approved procedures
  • Inspects harnesses, ropes, carabiners, belay devices, helmets, anchors, and assigned climbing areas before and during use
  • Provides belay services and approved climbing instruction only within the scope of completed training and authorization
  • Enforces climbing wall rules, participant conduct expectations, equipment requirements, and capacity limits consistently
  • Recognizes unsafe practices and stops activity when necessary to protect participants and staff
  • Responds to injuries, emergencies, and equipment concerns according to established emergency action and rescue procedures
  • Documents inspections, participation, incidents, equipment concerns, and shift activity as assigned
  • Maintains organized equipment storage and assists with routine cleaning and setup of the climbing area
  • Provides welcoming customer service and supports participants with varied experience levels
  • Supports clinics, programs, rentals, competitions, and special events as assigned
  • Participates in required skills training, evaluations, staff meetings, and emergency drills
  • Performs other related duties as assigned 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of employer-approved climbing wall attendant and belay training before performing duties independently
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, or ability to obtain within the timeframe established by the employer
  • Ability to demonstrate required equipment inspection, belay, communication, and emergency-response skills
  • Ability to enforce safety requirements and remain attentive in an active climbing environment 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Previous indoor climbing, outdoor recreation, challenge course, or climbing wall experience
  • Recognized climbing wall, belay, or instructor credential
  • Experience serving diverse participant populations 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Work Schedule Part-time schedule with hours varying based on climbing wall operations and program needs. Evening, weekend, holiday, and special event availability may be required. 

 

Work Environment 

  • Work is performed in indoor recreation/fitness, customer-service, office, and activity spaces as assigned.
  • The environment may include moderate to loud noise, changing temperatures, crowds, and exposure to cleaning products or outdoor weather conditions.
  • The position regularly interacts with patrons, students, guests, coworkers, vendors, and client representatives.
  • Work may occur during early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • The work environment described is representative of conditions encountered while performing the essential duties of the position. 

Physical Demands 

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position and move throughout assigned work areas for varying portions of the shift.
  • Frequently communicates with and exchanges accurate information with patrons, participants, staff, guests, and emergency responders.
  • Frequently uses hands and fingers to operate equipment, computers, radios, telephones, point-of-sale devices, or other tools required by the assignment.
  • Occasionally bends, reaches, kneels, crouches, pushes, pulls, and moves supplies or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Frequently stands, walks, bends, reaches overhead, grips equipment, and performs belay-related pulling and lowering movements.
  • Must be able to wear a harness, manage climbing equipment, visually monitor participants at height, and hear and respond to safety commands in a moderate-to-loud environment.
  • Must be able to respond promptly to emergency situations and perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
