Your Role:
As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, testing, integration, and commissioning of Low-Level Controls (LLC) software for medium-to-large automated material handling systems. You will work with Siemens PLC technologies, SCADA, HMI, drives, and safety systems to deliver reliable and high-quality control solutions.
You will collaborate with multidisciplinary and international project teams, support customer-facing activities, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, and contribute to the continuous improvement and standardization of Vanderlande's controls solutions.
What you will do/Key Responsibilities:
Controls Software Development & Engineering
Design, develop, and test LLC software for medium-to-large automated material handling systems using Siemens TIA Portal.
Develop functional PLC software based on customer requirements, project specifications, and standard controls architecture.
Program and configure Siemens PLC systems using Ladder Logic, FBD, STL, and SCL.
Configure and integrate PLC, HMI, SCADA, drives, and safety systems.
Apply reusable software modules, library structures, and standardized controls solutions.
Develop and maintain technical documentation including functional specifications, interface documents, and engineering deliverables.
Testing, Integration & Commissioning
Perform engineering, simulation, emulation, FAT, SAT, and site commissioning activities.
Troubleshoot software, communication, PLC, HMI, and controls-related issues during testing and commissioning.
Perform system integration activities with SCADA, Equipment Management, Mechanical, Electrical, and Safety disciplines.
Use Siemens diagnostic tools such as Proneta and online diagnostics for troubleshooting and system validation.
Support backup, version management, and software configuration activities.
Prepare test plans, commissioning documentation, and reports to support successful project delivery.
Support successful project handover and completion of Service Take Over (STO) deliverables.
Technical Leadership & Continuous Improvement
Identify project risks, technical issues, and dependencies and recommend appropriate mitigation actions.
Support customer meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions when required.
Mentor junior Controls Engineers and provide technical guidance during engineering, testing, and commissioning activities.
Ensure compliance with engineering standards, development processes, and quality guidelines.
Contribute to software standardization and continuous improvement of products, tools, and engineering processes.
Report technical progress, deviations, risks, and issues to the Project Lead Engineer and Group Leader.
Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary and multicultural project teams across global locations.
What you bring:
7+ years of relevant experience in industrial automation and PLC-based control systems.
Proven experience in engineering, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of automated material handling or industrial automation systems.
Experience working on international projects and site commissioning activities is preferred.
Strong hands-on experience with Siemens TIA Portal for PLC development, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning.
Good understanding of SCADA systems and system integration.
Experience with HMI development, screen configuration, alarms, diagnostics, and operator interfaces.
Strong knowledge of:
Ladder Logic
Function Block Diagram (FBD)
Statement List (STL)
Structured Control Language (SCL)
Hands-on experience with:
PROFINET
PROFIBUS
AS-i
Familiarity with Siemens engineering and diagnostic tools including Proneta, online diagnostics, backup, and version management.
Working knowledge of Siemens PLC concepts including data blocks, indirect addressing, reusable software modules, and library structures.
Basic to intermediate experience with Safety PLC programming, testing, and troubleshooting.
Experience with Rockwell Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk View is an added advantage.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural project teams.
Willingness to travel internationally for commissioning and customer support, approximately 50–70%.
