Firefighter/Paramedic

 The City of Twinsburg is seeking to establish an eligibility list for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.  This a full-time, classified, union, non-exempt (overtime eligible) position.  Firefighter/Paramedics work 24 hour shifts followed by 48 hours off work with Kelly days.  

Compensation:  The starting annual probationary compensation rate in 2026 is $76,320.00 annually plus benefits. The top pay range in 2026 is $93,770 annually. Wages and benefits once hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic are determined by a collective bargaining agreement. Firefighter/Medics receive a training bonus and may receive paramedic certification pay.  There are opportunities for overtime and longevity pay (with five years or more of service, added to hourly pay) with continued employment.

Testing:  
Candidates must complete the National Testing Network (NTN) FireTEAM Exam by 11:55 p.m. on November 1st, 2026 to be considered for the position. The test opens on September 27, 2026.

• Additional credit: A maximum of 15% additional credit is available to those achieving a passing score of 70%. This includes: 10% credit for Military Service; 5% credit for Associates degree; 10% credit for Bachelors degree; 1% credit for Fire Safety Inspector Certification and a 1% credit for every full year of Part Time employment with Twinsburg Fire Department as stated in Civil Service rules. • IMPORTANT: Applicants do not need a Certification of Firefighter’s Physical Agility to take the written test, but MUST provide proof of such Certification at time of conditional job offer as follows:
  1. Certification of Firefighter’s Physical Agility Test from Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C), Auburn Career Center or Stark State or other facility that offers the same Firefighter’s Physical Agility Test - passing time of seven (7) minutes or less.   Certification must be less than twelve (12) months old at time of conditional job offer.

Minimum requirements include:

• Eighteen (18) years of age and a U.S. Citizen; 
• Valid Ohio Drivers License and a good driving history;
• No Felony, Domestic Violence or Sex Crime Convictions;
• No Crimes against a person or Property Crimes within five (5) years;
• No Minor Misdemeanor Crimes within one (1) year (excluding traffic);
• Must pass a Civil Service Entrance Examination followed by interviews and a background check. 
• Applicants who receive a conditional job offer must meet all medical and physical requirements required by the Twinsburg Civil Service Commission and the Twinsburg Fire Department including a pre-employment drug screen (which includes marijuana/THC) and medical and psychological assessments. 
• Current State of Ohio Firefighter II Certification and Paramedic Certification at time of appointment.  

Working Conditions: 
Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, grasp, handle or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear and smell, and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work with bright, flashing lights.  
 
Employee will be exposed to hazards, including, but not limited to, toxic agents, smoke, bodily fluids, dust, fumes, heat, cold, noise, and odors. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Working conditions are typically quiet but may be loud at an emergency scene. Must be able to work varied shifts, hours, and locations, including weekends and holidays.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responds to fire and medical emergency situations; provides emergency medical care and fire suppression services; assists with fire prevention in the fire district.
• Responds to HAZMAT incidents.
• Maintains department vehicle and equipment readiness and maintenance, assists with department cleanliness and maintenance.
• Assists with fire inspections and re-inspections of buildings and businesses.
• Maintains a level of physical fitness to safely perform emergency rescue, medical care and fire suppression responsibilities.  
• Operates fire apparatus or other vehicles in an emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens.
• Performs firefighting tasks (e.g. hoseline operations, extensive crawling, lifting carrying heavy objects, ventilating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry), rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions while wearing personal protective ensembles (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), including working in extremely hot or cold environments for prolonged time periods.
• Climbs ladders or stairs while wearing fire protective gear and carrying equipment/tools.
• Searching, finding, and rescue - dragging or carrying victims to safety despite hazardous conditions and low visibility.
• Advancing water-filled hose lines from fire apparatus to occupancy; can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles.
• Operating from heights, walking or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards.
• Critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments (including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces), further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions.
• Ability to communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders while wearing PPE and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose lines and/or fixed protection systems (sprinklers).
• Functioning as part of a team.
• Must be able to locate addresses. 
• Training - skills maintenance and acquisition, physical fitness.
• May attend community events to provide safety services and community outreach.  
• Regular and punctual attendance.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.  The employee will be exposed to bright, flashing lights and sirens.  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste and smell. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Must possess and maintain valid Fulltime Firefighter card (PFF or 1-C), minimum of an EMT-B Certification. Ohio Fire Safety Inspector Certification must be obtained within two (2) years of appointment, HAZMAT Training as required. Must be trained in Incident Command and Emergency Vehicle Driving.
• Ability to read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner.
• Must be knowledgeable in the local and State of Ohio laws for Fire Prevention.
