Job Summary
The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and installing commercial refrigeration and related mechanical systems that support grocery store operations, a medium-scale production kitchen, and a fast-casual café. This role ensures critical equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
Job Description
- Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot commercial refrigeration systems, walk-in coolers, freezers, display cases, and ice machines
- Perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration, HVAC, and related mechanical equipment
- Install, replace, and commission refrigeration components and equipment as needed
- Diagnose electrical, mechanical, and control system issues and complete repairs in a timely manner
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability and efficiency
- Respond to emergency equipment failures to minimize operational downtime
- Maintain accurate service, repair, and maintenance records
- Coordinate with operations management and outside vendors when necessary
- Ensure compliance with food safety, environmental, and operational standards
- Address and resolve maintenance tickets in a timely and efficient manner
- Develop self-help troubleshooting materials and supportive guides for associates
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Education and Experience
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required
- 5-7 years of commercial refrigeration maintenance and repair experience required
- Experience supporting grocery, food production, restaurant, hospitality, or similar commercial environments preferred
- EPA Section 608 Certification preferred
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving is required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of commercial refrigeration, HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and control systems
- Ability to diagnose and repair refrigeration, electrical, and mechanical equipment failures
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, technical manuals, and equipment specifications
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and equipment reliability standards
- Proficiency using diagnostic tools, meters, hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment
- Understanding of applicable food safety, environmental, and workplace safety standards
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple service requests effectively
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance, repair, and service records
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Basic Microsoft Office and computer skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb for extended periods
- Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights
- Ability to work in confined spaces and around operating mechanical equipment
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including refrigerated, freezer, indoor, outdoor, and high-temperature kitchen environments
- Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday
- Ability to respond to emergency service calls outside normal business hours as needed
- Ability to safely operate tools, testing equipment, and other maintenance devices
- Adherence to OSHA regulations, company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and required personal protective equipment (PPE) standards
- Ability to recognize hazards and maintain a safe working environment for employees, customers, and contractors
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as business needs require
