Job Summary

Job Title: Superintendent - Automation

Job Location: Augusta, GA

OVERVIEW

The Superintendent, Automation (Project Field Lead / On-Site Control Systems Lead) provides dedicated, on-site field leadership, supervision, and technical oversight for complex Building Automation System (BAS) installations specifically serving as the primary field leader for our critical projects.

The Superintendent plays a critical role in minimizing inefficiencies, maintaining full-time safety oversight, and driving schedule adherence. This role combines hands-on technical execution, subcontractor management, pre-commissioning checks, and quality assurance to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to strict quality standards and safety.

RESPONSIBILITIES

On-Site Field Leadership & Project Execution

  • On-Site Operations: Maintain a full-time, direct management presence on the job site, directing day-to-day installation activities and managing low-voltage electrical subcontractors and field technicians.
  • Technical Quality & Installation: Perform and oversee low-voltage wiring, sensor/actuator mounting, control panel terminations, and pre-commissioning checks per project drawings, specifications, and ANSI/TIA/EIA-862 cabling standards.
  • Subcontractor Management: Supervise low-voltage electrical subcontractors to ensure installation quality, minimize rework, and keep installation milestones aligned with the master project schedule.
  • Project Coordination: Work directly with the assigned Project Manager, Operations Manager, General Contractor, mechanical contractors, and client site representatives to resolve field issues quickly, perform job-site surveys, and prevent schedule delays.

Safety, Quality Assurance, & Compliance

  • Safety Leadership: Drive a zero-injury safety culture on site. Ensure 100% compliance with OSHA, NEC, and company safety standards, including personal protective equipment (PPE), lift operation, and site-specific safety protocols.
  • Documentation & As-Builts: Accurately label all components/cabling, maintain updated redline drawings to reflect as-built field conditions, and coordinate formal commissioning handoffs with the Project Manager.
  • Field Mentorship: Provide ongoing technical guidance, best-practice training, and safety mentorship to junior field installers and technicians assigned to the project.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)

  • Safety: Maintain a 0 Recordable Injury record on site and sustain a 0-accident driving record.
  • Project Profitability & Margin Retainage: Execute field labor and subcontractor oversight efficiently to maintain or exceed defined project profit margins (30% margin target).
  • Quality & Rework: Minimize installation rework through first-pass quality control during pre-commissioning.
  • Schedule Adherence: Achieve all assigned field installation and pre-commissioning milestones on or ahead of the project schedule.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Required Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in low-voltage HVAC controls installation, BAS field lead roles, or commercial electrical systems supervision.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Technical degree or trade certifications in HVAC/Controls preferred.
  • Safety Certification: OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced working knowledge of commercial/industrial HVAC fundamentals, mechanical equipment, and non-proprietary BAS architectures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Distech Controls, Tridium Niagara (AX/N4), and/or Schneider Electric Controls.
  • Mastery in reading and interpreting complex control schematics, mechanical drawings, and electrical blueprints.
  • Strong expertise in low-voltage panel terminations, conduit bending, structured cabling, BACnet networking, and digital multi-meter troubleshooting.

Soft Skills & Core Competencies

  • Empowering & Team-Oriented: Takes pride in bringing out the best in field crews and subcontractors, aligning with core organizational values.
  • Autonomous & Decisive: Highly self-driven and capable of making sound, on-site technical decisions with minimal direct daily oversight.
  • Credible & Communicative: Strong verbal and written communication skills; builds trust easily with general contractors, end-users, and internal leadership through transparency and discipline.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Physical Capability: Must be able to climb ladders/scaffolding, operate aerial lifts (up to 40+ feet), distinguish colors for electrical wiring, and lift or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Environment: Work involves navigating active mechanical rooms, ceiling plenums, rooftops, and construction sites with potential exposure to seasonal weather extremes, noise, dust, and confined spaces.
  • PPE: Proper use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all times.
  • Travel / Location: Primary assignment is on-site in Augusta, GA, with occasional travel across GA, AL, or Carolinas divisions as regional project needs dictate.
