Faculty, Veterinary Technology

This full-time, tenure track faculty member is responsible for teaching and evaluating students in veterinary technology studies in the STEM Division. The faculty member assists with decisions regarding instructional materials, participates in division and college-wide discussions and meetings, curriculum development and assessment, assists the division with administrative and committee work, and fulfills other faculty responsibilities. Responsibilities may include assignments to support courses in related areas.  Assignments may include instruction at the main and branch campuses.

1. Provides college-level instruction in veterinary technology lecture and laboratory courses and other related college-level courses, as needed. 
2. Prepares and provides lecture, laboratory, and clinical instruction according to the required curriculum.
3. Possess the capability to deliver online lessons to students.
4. Develops and updates course syllabi and related materials to reflect contemporary scientific theory and research.
5. Provides investigative laboratory experiences utilizing the scientific method.
6. Collaborates with other faculty in the development of effective teaching/learning and retention strategies for students.
7. Actively participates in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of the Veterinary Technology curriculum.
8. Contributes to and/or generates reports and supportive materials for accrediting agencies.
9. Provides student support by evaluating student progress and providing feedback, maintaining voice and email communication, referring students to appropriate support services, providing academic advice, maintaining office hours, maintaining appropriate academic and attendance records, and submitting final grades.
10. Provide educational assistance to students during regularly scheduled times (i.e., office hours) or by appointment.
11. Maintain communication with the Program Director on all issues related to student activity. 

1. Works with local high schools and transfer college partners to facilitate the growth of the STEM division programs.

1. Implements the philosophy, mission, learning outcomes and objectives, curriculum, and policies of the College and the STEM Division.
2. Maintains necessary academic records and submits records according to published deadlines.
3. Demonstrates fairness and flexibility in interactions with a broad range of students by promoting and supporting the value of diversity and cultural sensitivity in all aspects of teaching and learning.
4. Assists in the recommendation and acquisition of related instructional materials and supplies.

1. The physical ability to perform veterinary duties.
2. Competency in contemporary veterinary medicine.
3. Ability to demonstrate the correct usage of standard veterinary technology instruments, lab, and surgery equipment.
4. Ability to demonstrate competency with classroom delivery on a wide range of veterinary technology core curricula, including, but not limited to: avian/exotics, large, and small animal medicine, behavior, hematology, parasitology, radiology, dentistry, surgery, anesthesia, emergency and critical care, veterinary anatomy and physiology, and veterinary medical terminology;

1. Participates in a reasonable number of Divisional and College activities and committees which may include the College Assembly, the Faculty Senate, Academic Council, search committees, divisional committees, program assessment and review, college accreditation, Student Activities, STEM club, and the STEM Honors and Research Academy. 
2. Attend all mandatory scheduled meetings.
3. Contributes to the community as a representative of the College. 
4. Maintains professional competence (faculty development) to meet accreditation standards by continuous participation in scientific endeavors, attending educational seminars in a professional field, reading current literature, attending online courses, professional self-development, research, and grant writing relevant to faculty responsibilities, etc.
5. Performs other duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree -or- Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT) or equivalent required.

• Minimum of two (2) years of clinical veterinary experience working with veterinary technicians or technologists required.
• Experience working in an academic setting is preferred
• Current license or eligibility for licensure as a veterinarian in the state of New Jersey upon hire -or- Current certification or eligibility for credentialing as a veterinary technician in the state of New Jersey upon hire required.

• Ability to design and implement successful pedagogical strategies for students exhibiting a broad range of abilities
• Utilization of innovative teaching methods incorporating technology, including online resources and presentation of material through field and laboratory exercises
• Commitment and ability to utilize instructional strategies to promote student recruitment, retention, and success 
• Ability to help students succeed in the college academic community 
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to interact productively with students, colleagues, administration, and the community
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form 
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with others
• Prior experience utilizing innovative teaching methods, incorporating the use of technology and online resource strategies.
• Possess appropriate technological equipment to handle online learning platform.
• Fairness and flexibility in understanding and working with a wide variety of students and assisting them with adjusting to the intellectual environment and requirements of a college academic community.
• Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS   

• Minimum of two (2) years of classroom and/or lab experience teaching veterinary technology, veterinary medicine, or animal science in higher education
• Publication in the peer-reviewed literature as it pertains to veterinary technology, veterinary medicine, or animal science
• Experience in outcomes assessment and program evaluation methodologies
• Excellence in teaching and facilitating the learning process for students
• Learning and using new technology and applying diverse instructional strategies in response to learner demographics and learning styles
• Demonstrated ability to teach both science students and non-science majors as well as team teaches interdisciplinary courses.
• Being a successful advocate for new initiatives in curriculum or delivery
• Being skilled in building strategic alliances both within and across disciplines and within and outside the College
• Ability to involve students in STEM-related community service 
• Demonstrated ability to improve critical thinking skills and formal report writing in students in veterinary technology, veterinary medicine, animal science, and related science courses
