The Material Handler - Shipping Lead is responsible for coordinating daily shipping activities while actively performing material handling duties in a fast-paced print manufacturing environment. This position serves as the shift's primary shipping resource, ensuring customer orders are processed accurately, loaded on time, documented properly, and handled safely. The Shipping Lead provides direction and support to Material Handlers, assists with training, and works closely with Production, Finishing, Inventory, Mailing, and Transportation teams to ensure timely shipment of customer products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Shipping Operations
- Coordinate daily shipping priorities and workflow to ensure on-time customer deliveries.
- Review shipping schedules and communicate shipment requirements to team members.
- Verify shipment accuracy, quantities, pallet counts, and shipping documentation before loading.
- Load and unload LTL, truckload, parcel, and mail shipments safely and efficiently.
- Ensure Bills of Lading, pallet control sheets, shipping logs, and carrier documentation are completed accurately.
- Stage finished goods for shipment and maintain organized dock locations.
- Investigate and resolve shipping discrepancies, damaged freight, and inventory issues.
- Coordinate with carriers regarding pickup schedules and special shipping requirements.
- Assist in tracing delayed or lost shipments and supporting claim documentation when necessary.
Leadership and Team Support
- Provide day-to-day direction and support to Shipping Material Handlers.
- Train new employees on shipping procedures, safety requirements, equipment operation, and workflow expectations.
- Monitor productivity and work assignments to maintain efficient dock operations.
- Promote teamwork and maintain positive communication across shifts and departments.
- Serve as the primary point of contact when the Shipping Supervisor or Manager is unavailable.
- Identify process improvement opportunities and assist with implementation.
Material Handling
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, wrappers, and other material handling equipment safely.
- Move raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods throughout the facility.
- Maintain inventory accuracy through proper tracking, labeling, and documentation.
- Verify incoming and outgoing material counts and report discrepancies immediately.
- Support production and finishing departments by ensuring materials are delivered where needed.
Quality and Safety
- Inspect pallets and shipments for quality, damage, accuracy, and compliance with company standards.
- Enforce established shipping procedures, SOPs, and safety policies.
- Conduct daily forklift inspections and ensure equipment is operating safely.
- Maintain a clean, organized shipping dock and warehouse environment.
- Participate in safety meetings, observations, and continuous improvement programs.
- Ensure OSHA, company safety, and customer compliance requirements are followed.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of shipping, warehouse, logistics, or material handling experience.
- Strong understanding of shipping, receiving, warehousing, and material handling processes.
- Ability to read and interpret job tickets, shipping instructions, bills of lading, and customer requirements.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Effective communication and leadership abilities.
- Ability to troubleshoot shipping and inventory issues independently.
- Proficiency with shipping software, inventory systems, and basic Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to train and mentor employees.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Basic mathematical skills including counts, weights, measurements, and inventory calculations.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, squat, and lift throughout the workday.
- Ability to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing and warehouse environment with varying temperatures and noise levels.
