Job Description:

The Research Technician supports ongoing research activities in the Ugarova Lab by performing laboratory techniques, experimental procedures, and data collection related to cell and molecular biology research. Under the supervision and guidance of the Research Staff Investigator, the technician will assist with laboratory experiments, maintain and monitor research animal colonies, perform or assist with approved surgical procedures, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, and accurately document experimental procedures and results. The position will organize, analyze, and prepare research data; maintain laboratory records and supplies; ensure proper handling and disposal of laboratory waste; and support the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. The technician may also train students and other laboratory personnel on equipment operation and technical procedures and assist with ordering laboratory supplies and equipment as needed.

Rate of pay: $21.20 per hour

Essential Duties:

  • Perform cell and molecular biology laboratory techniques and experimental procedures in support of assigned research projects.

  • Conduct laboratory tests, experiments, and data collection under the direction of the Research Staff Investigator.

  • Operate and appropriately maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, analytical balances, and other specialized equipment.

  • Assist with the maintenance, monitoring, and care of laboratory mouse colonies in accordance with established research protocols and institutional guidelines.

  • Perform or assist with surgical and other research procedures involving laboratory animals as required and appropriately trained.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments, procedures, observations, and research results.

  • Organize, analyze, and prepare experimental data for computer entry, analysis, and reporting.

  • Review and evaluate research data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.

  • Follow established laboratory protocols, safety procedures, and institutional requirements for the handling of biological materials, chemicals, animals, and laboratory equipment.

  • Package and coordinate the appropriate disposal of biological, chemical, and other laboratory waste in accordance with established procedures.

  • Train and provide technical guidance to students and other laboratory personnel on laboratory procedures, equipment operation, and research protocols.

  • Monitor laboratory supplies and assist with ordering and maintaining adequate inventory of equipment, materials, and reagents.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.

  • Perform other related duties in support of laboratory research and operations as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a related biological science field.

  • Experience working in a biological, cell biology, molecular biology, or biomedical research laboratory.

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures, techniques, methods, and principles sufficient to perform a variety of research protocols.

  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, analytical balances, and related equipment.

  • Experience with laboratory animal handling, mouse colony maintenance, or research animal procedures.

  • Knowledge of basic quantitative and statistical methods used in biological research.

  • Ability to accurately collect, record, organize, and evaluate experimental data.

  • Ability to follow detailed experimental protocols and maintain accurate laboratory records.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and communicate inconsistencies or unexpected results.

  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with faculty, research staff, students, and other laboratory personnel.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to learn new laboratory techniques, equipment, and procedures as research needs evolve.

Working Environment:

Activities are performed in an office, lab setting and in the field subject to extended periods of field work, sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse, and standing for varying lengths of time. May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirator. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
