Workweek: Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

The City of Jersey City is seeking a laborer for the Division of Waste Recycling in the Department of Public Works. This position will be responsible for performing varied types of cleaning services such as sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming City offices. Additionally, this candidate will be responsible for maintaining and restocking cleaning supplies.
Job Duties:
- Cleans business offices, restrooms, De-escalation centers, City parking lots, halls, animal shelters, and other buildings.
- Washes and cleans interior windows and glass doors.
- Mops, sweeps, and polishes floors.
- Dusts desks, tables, chairs, and other furniture.
- Vacuums carpets and floors.
- Travels to all City buildings upon request.
- Collects rubbish and other refuse.
- Sweeps streets and sidewalks and cleans sewers.
- Loads debris into a truck for removal.
- Assists carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, and steamfitters by carrying tools/materials, placing/removing ladders, and cleaning up after work has been done.
- Requires the usage of various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Required Experience:
One (1) year of experience in performing labor manual and unskilled labor work is preferred.
Required License:
Appointees must possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Essential Skills:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, and supplies used to perform varied types of manual and unskilled tasks.
- Ability to perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group.
- Ability to follow prescribed instructions.
- Ability to learn to use the tools and equipment needed to perform routine, unskilled labor tasks.
- Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment.
- Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
This is a Civil Service Job and you must eventually pass and qualify for the applicable Civil Service title.
