The City is offering a Sign-On Bonus for Bus Mechanics: $500 with first paycheck and 2% of gross earnings during first year of employment at first anniversary.

Candidates can complete up to 20 ASE Tests to earn up to an additional $5.00 per hour.
Late night and weekend work earns an additional $1.00 per hour.
Snap On and Milwaukee tools provided to all mechanics.
Uniforms and Laundry Service provided.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday through Friday, rotating shifts of 1:30pm to 10:30pm and 4:30pm to 1:30am; occasional Saturdays.
This position is eligible for overtime.
In addition, a shift differential of $1.00/hour will be paid for working the following hours:

Monday – Friday: 6:30 PM until 4:00 AM
Saturday – all day (24 hours)

Job Summary

Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs skilled mechanical and electrical work on transit vehicles, including gasoline, diesel, and battery-electric drivetrains. Follows the Agency Maintenance Plan to complete A, B, C, and D level preventive maintenance (PM) routines and carries out diagnostic evaluations and repairs on engines, transmissions, cooling systems, brake systems, HVAC, and 12/24-volt electrical systems. Uses Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) service information, diagnostic software, and established repair procedures to identify faults, prepare required parts and tools, and complete repairs to specification. Assists with the installation and troubleshooting of communications, telematics, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Intelligent Transit System (ITS) equipment. Documents all work performed, including inspections, repairs, parts usage, and service notes in fleet maintenance software.

Progression path: Diesel Bus Mechanic ? Senior Diesel Bus Mechanic ? Shop Foreman. All tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop resources are provided. Uniforms and laundry service, steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves are also provided. Eligible for additional OEM and ASE-certifying coursework.

Essential Functions	% of Time
Perform Repairs and Complete Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Perform complex repairs on gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles as well as shop and facility equipment, including work on engines, electric drive motors, high-voltage vehicle electrical systems, electronically controlled transmissions, ride-height and suspension systems, steering components, kingpins, wheel bearings, tires, air brake and hydraulic brake systems (including ABS), multiplexing electrical systems, lighting systems, pneumatic air systems, HVAC systems, fare collection systems, and ITS. Follow OEM diagnostic procedures such as wiring diagrams, diagnostic trees, repair manuals, parts manuals, and schematics to troubleshoot and identify the root cause of failures. Use diagnostic software (including Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Bendix, Wabco, Proterra Diagnostic, ViriCiti, Genfare, and ShopKey), multimeters, specialized tools, test gauges, and on-board vehicle maintenance systems to perform evaluations. After identifying the issue, select an effective repair method, complete the repair to OEM specifications, and verify safe and proper operation. Maintain accurate and complete records of all diagnostics and repairs in fleet maintenance software and actively report safety issues or concerns encountered during work.	55%
Conduct Preventive Maintenance: Perform A, B, C, and D PM services and safety inspections on gasoline, diesel, and electric buses, as well as shop and facility equipment. Identify and complete necessary repairs found during the inspection process to ensure vehicles meet operational and safety standards before returning them to service. Use fleet maintenance software to complete electronic PM check sheets for each service, ensuring documentation is clear and accurate. Verify vehicle performance, confirm proper system function, and ensure all components meet required safety and reliability standards.	30%
Assist in installation and Repair of Specialized Equipment: Assist with the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and repair of specialized vehicle systems including cellular data systems and modems, Wi-Fi equipment, emergency lighting, two-way radios, mobile data terminal mounts, fare collection systems, ITS, GPS equipment, body add-ons, and decals. Perform tests and adjustments as needed to ensure proper operation and integration with vehicle systems.	10%
Provide On-call Field Service: Respond to field service calls and assess vehicle and worksite safety upon arrival. Perform basic on-site diagnostic checks to determine whether the vehicle can be repaired in the field or requires towing to the shop. Conduct essential field repairs such as tire changes, battery replacements, and vehicle jump starts as needed. Ensure all actions follow safety guidelines and established procedures.	5%

Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.

Over two (2) years of experience in hands-on vehicle repair to include at least one (1) year of experience working on transit buses or diesel engines.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working on diesel, gasoline and electric vehicles.

ASE certified in Heavy Duty Trucks, Transit, and Automobiles.

Driver's License Requirements

Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire.

Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with passenger endorsement within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence.

Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.

Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.

Electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines, transmissions, and related vehicle subsystems.

Failure diagnosis, repair techniques, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses, heavy vehicles, and mixed-fuel transit fleets.

Diagnostic principles, including interpreting wiring diagrams, schematics, diagnostic trees, and OEM troubleshooting procedures.

The procedures and technical methods used in the testing, repair, and adjustment of radio, communication, telematics, and other electronic equipment.

Genfare fare collection system operation, repair, and maintenance.

ITS components, communication interfaces, and troubleshooting methods.

OSHA and safe working practices, including hazard identification, PPE requirements, and safe shop procedures.

Fundamental concepts of high-voltage electric vehicle power systems and ARC Flash safety training.

Proper documentation practices, including how to record repair actions, diagnostics performed, and parts used within fleet maintenance software.

Basic principles of learning and adapting to new tools, technologies, and procedures efficiently while performing assigned duties.

Ability to:

Use test equipment such as computers, diagnostic software, gauges, handheld meters, and mechanical/electronic diagnostic tools to evaluate vehicle performance and identify faults.

Operate revenue and non-revenue vehicles safely in and around garage/shop areas and on public roadways.

Apply independent judgment and sound decision-making to perform repairs efficiently, minimize downtime, and ensure safe vehicle operation.

Plan, organize, and prioritize work tasks to complete repairs in a timely and effective manner.

Perform detailed manual tasks requiring coordinated hand movements, precision, and attention to small components.

Distinguish variations in sound, vibration, and equipment operation to identify failures or abnormal conditions.

Work cooperatively with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, and contractors, maintaining positive and productive working relationships.

Read, understand, and apply technical manuals, OEM troubleshooting guides, service updates, repair instructions, and written procedures.

Write clear and accurate reports and emails using proper grammar, spelling, and formatting.

Perform calculations and apply practical math, including fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement.

Adapt to changing work demands, respond to urgent situations when necessary, and work a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and overtime.

Learn new diagnostic techniques, tools, and processes quickly and apply them to daily repair tasks.

Document work performed clearly and accurately, following established fleet maintenance recordkeeping standards.

Safely and effectively use a full range of shop tools and equipment, including hand tools, diagnostic instruments, electrical and pneumatic tools, A/C recovery equipment, forklifts, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press.

Utilize specialized diagnostic systems including Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Proterra Diagnostics, and Luminator destination sign software to evaluate and repair vehicle systems.

Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Fleet Maintenance or Transit Bus shop.

Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical danger or abuse.

Physical Demands:
Constantly requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching and stooping. Occasionally requires sitting and handling/grasping. Very heavy strength demands include exerting 100-150 pounds occasionally, exerting 50-100 pounds frequently, or exerting 20-50 pounds constantly.
