Join Sarasota County's Planning and Development Services team as the Permit Center Supervisor for our North County Permit Center. In this leadership role, you'll oversee the daily operations of the Permit Center, guiding a dedicated team while ensuring permits are processed accurately and efficiently. You'll play a key role in staff development through scheduling, training, coaching, performance management, and supporting departmental goals alongside the Manager II for Permitting, Building Official, and Deputy Building Officials.

Supervisory experience in a permitting or construction-related environment and an ICC Permit Technician Certification are preferred but not required. About the Position

In this role, you will...

  • Lead the daily operations of the North Permit Center, supervising staff and ensuring exceptional customer service for residents, contractors, and internal partners.

  • Guide customers through the permitting process by reviewing applications, troubleshooting online submissions in Accela, determining permit types and fees, scheduling inspections, and answering questions in person, by phone, email, and online.

  • Serve as the primary resource for complex permitting issues, collaborating with Plans Examiners, Building Division staff, and customers to resolve challenges and improve the overall permitting experience.

  • Support continuous improvement by identifying process enhancements, maintaining compliance with county policies and regulations, and helping ensure accurate financial and permit processing.

  • Recruit, train, coach, and develop Permit Center staff while supporting performance management, operational planning, and departmental goals.

  • Assist with audits, fraud prevention, risk mitigation, and other administrative and financial initiatives to help maintain efficient and compliant Permit Center operations.

About the Schedule

Work Hours:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.

  • Typical Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (no weekends!)

As a reminder, all county employees are considered essential and must be prepared to protect and support the community and its citizens. Each employee, without exception, will have a duty assignment and be required to work during a disaster or declared emergency.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • OR: 2-year Associates degree with 2 years of related work experience.

  • Minimum of High School diploma and 4-years related work experience.

  • A minimum of 1-year supervisory experience is required
    (lead worker or acting in a supervisory capacity may be
    counted).

  • Valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.

  • Experience building positive relationships and providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to coach, support, and motivate a team.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

  • Willingness and ability to learn county software and systems.

  • Supervisory experience in a permitting office, building department, or construction-related environment.

  • ICC Permit Technician Certification.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of 5 years.

Physical Demands: Employees in this role must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.

About Everything Else

Starting Pay Range: $60,028.80 - $65,000.00, based on experience.
