Akron General’s Rapid Observation Unit is part of the Emergency Department (ED) and provides treatment and evaluation to patients while determining if the patient needs to be admitted to the hospital. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant on the team, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and observation as needed. This is a hands-on role that requires a present, attentive and patient caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Due to this being a PRN role, you will also have plenty of flexibility and the ability to enjoy a good work-life balance. On this team, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments. 

 

A PRN caregiver in this position works varying shifts. Working 48 hours per 6-week period will be required 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies. 

  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, back rubs, etc.  

  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height. 

  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction, removing of urinary Foley Catheters and other therapeutic measures in a safe and effective manner. 

  • Prepare patients for meals, assist in feeding patient if necessary and distribute water and other nourishments according to patient needs in compliance with physician orders. 

  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 

  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 

  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 

  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area. 

  • Assist in keeping patient rooms in order, reporting equipment that is out of order, cleaning equipment (as assigned) and mandatory inventory and distributing unit linen and supplies. 

  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  

  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within new hire period 

  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) Certification 

  • One year of recent acute care experience OR military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) 

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
