Position Overview
The Director of Surveying serves as the senior surveying leader responsible for the technical, operational, financial, and strategic performance of the Survey Department. This individual will oversee all professional surveying services, including boundary, topographic, platting, construction, and related surveying activities while ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, client satisfaction, and profitable growth.
The ideal candidate is a licensed Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) who combines exceptional technical expertise with proven leadership abilities, business acumen, and a passion for innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Department Leadership
- Lead and oversee all Survey Department operations, personnel, and resources.
- Develop and implement departmental goals, performance metrics, and growth strategies.
- Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Recruit, mentor, and develop professional, technical, and field staff.
- Establish succession plans and support professional development throughout the team.
Technical Leadership
- Serve as the firm's senior technical authority for surveying matters.
- Provide professional oversight, responsible charge, and review of surveying deliverables.
- Direct boundary, easement, right-of-way, retracement, and legal description determinations.
- Ensure compliance with Florida statutes, professional standards, and internal QA/QC procedures.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to surveyors, technicians, CAD professionals, and field crews.
Project & Client Management
- Oversee surveying projects from proposal through completion.
- Ensure projects are appropriately scoped, staffed, scheduled, and delivered within budget.
- Act as a senior advisor and client contact on complex assignments.
- Build and maintain relationships with developers, design professionals, contractors, attorneys, and public agencies.
- Support multidisciplinary project delivery across engineering, planning, and surveying teams.
Financial & Business Management
- Manage departmental revenue, profitability, utilization, backlog, and staffing objectives.
- Develop pricing strategies and project fee structures.
- Monitor project performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability.
- Assist executive leadership with strategic investment decisions involving technology, staffing, and equipment.
Business Development
- Identify opportunities to expand surveying services and enter new markets.
- Develop relationships with new and existing clients.
- Prepare proposals, scopes of services, and fee estimates.
- Collaborate with leadership to support organic growth and market expansion.
Innovation & Technology
- Champion the use of modern surveying technologies and workflows.
- Evaluate emerging technology solutions and recommend strategic investments.
- Develop workflows and service offerings related to LiDAR, terrestrial scanning, UAVs, GIS, and advanced data collection technologies.
- Help maintain the firm's position as a technologically advanced surveying practice.
Qualifications
Required
- Current Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) license, or ability to obtain Florida licensure through endorsement.
- Strong knowledge of Florida land surveying practices and regulations.
- Experience leading surveying teams, projects, and operational functions.
- Demonstrated success managing client relationships and project delivery.
- Strong financial, business, and operational management skills.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and modern field-to-finish survey workflows.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive professional surveying experience.
- 5+ years of leadership or department management experience.
- Background in boundary, topographic, construction, platting, and ALTA/NSPS surveys.
- Familiarity with UAV/drone mapping, LiDAR, terrestrial scanning, GIS, GNSS/GPS, and related technologies.
- Existing relationships within Florida's development, engineering, construction, or municipal markets.
