SUMMARY:

The Director of Tram Operations & Facilities provides leadership and oversight for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of an aerial tramway and its associated facilities, infrastructure, and operational assets. This position is responsible for ensuring exceptional operational standards, regulatory compliance, preventative maintenance, facility readiness, and a high-quality visitor experience.

The Director leads tramway operations, facilities, maintenance, and related support functions while coordinating closely with the General Manager and other departments. The position plays a critical role in managing seasonal tourism demands, Alaska's variable weather and environmental conditions, emergency preparedness, equipment reliability, and operational continuity. The Director is also responsible for developing and maintaining a highly trained team and ensuring that all operations are conducted in accordance with applicable safety standards, regulations, policies, and industry best practices.

Qualifications

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Experience working in a safety-critical or highly regulated operating environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, vendors, contractors, and operational resources.
  • Strong knowledge of preventative maintenance, facility operations, safety practices, and emergency response.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make sound operational decisions in changing weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and extended hours during peak tourism periods.
  • Experience operating or managing an aerial tramway, gondola, cable car, ski lift, amusement attraction, transportation system, or similar passenger conveyance.
  • Experience managing seasonal employees and high-volume tourism operations.
  • Familiarity with applicable OSHA, state, local, and industry-specific safety requirements.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in operations management, engineering, facilities management, business administration, hospitality, transportation, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in operations, facilities, transportation, tourism, hospitality, industrial operations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading operational, maintenance, or facilities teams.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and technical documentation requirements.
  • Ability to work in a mountain environment with variable weather, heights, and physically demanding terrain.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed
  • Ability to successfully pass background check.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification in safety or transportation management.
  • Certification such as Ropeway Operations (e.g., NARSO), Facility Management Professional (FMP), or Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Prior experience with aerial tramways, ski lifts, ropeways, or related transportation systems.
  • Experience working within Alaska Native corporations or tourism organizations.
  • Background in large-scale facility operations, resort operations, or high-volume guest attractions.

Pay and Benefits

Annual Compensation is between $112,000 to $137,750 annually

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Tram Operations: Direct the safe, reliable, and efficient daily operation of the aerial tramway, including operating procedures, staffing, scheduling, inspections, opening and closing procedures, weather monitoring, operational readiness, and service continuity.
  • Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, safety requirements, permits, inspections, codes, and industry standards related to aerial tramway operations, occupational safety, facilities, and public access.
  • Facilities Management: Oversee the operation, maintenance, cleanliness, security, and overall condition of buildings, guest areas, tram terminals, grounds, utilities, and other attraction facilities to ensure they are safe, functional, and visitor-ready.
  • Maintenance & Asset Management: Establish and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance programs for the tramway, mechanical systems, equipment, facilities, vehicles, and infrastructure to maximize reliability, safety, asset life, and operational efficiency.
  • Emergency & Incident Management: Develop, maintain, and regularly exercise emergency response, evacuation, rescue, weather, power outage, equipment failure, and business-continuity procedures, ensuring employees are properly trained and prepared to respond.
  • Weather & Environmental Operations: Monitor and respond to Alaska weather, environmental, and site conditions that may affect tramway operations, facilities, employee safety, or the visitor experience, making timely decisions regarding operating status and closures.
  • People Leadership & Development: Recruit, train, supervise, and develop tram operations, facilities, and maintenance personnel while establishing clear performance expectations and fostering a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and service excellence.
  • Operational Planning & Performance: Develop operating plans, staffing models, procedures, schedules, and performance standards that support seasonal tourism volumes, operational efficiency, guest satisfaction, and organizational objectives.
  • Capital Projects & Improvements: Identify facility, infrastructure, equipment, and technology needs and participate in the planning, budgeting, procurement, and implementation of capital improvements and major maintenance projects.
  • Vendor & Contractor Management: Manage relationships with contractors, service providers, equipment suppliers, engineering professionals, and other vendors to ensure quality, cost-effective, and timely delivery of services and projects.
  • Budget & Resource Management: Develop and manage departmental budgets, monitor expenditures, control operating costs, and ensure resources are effectively allocated to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Guest Experience: Partner with Guest Services and other departments to ensure tram operations, facilities, and public areas support a safe, welcoming, accessible, and exceptional visitor experience.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate operational, maintenance, safety, inspection, training, incident, and regulatory records and provide timely reports and recommendations to the General Manager and senior leadership.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the General Manager and leaders across tourism, guest services, finance, human resources, marketing, retail, food and beverage, and other functions to coordinate operations and achieve organizational goals.
