The City of Medford is seeking a Traffic Signal Electrical Inspector to join our Engineering & Development team. In this role, you’ll spend time in the field inspecting traffic signal and streetlight installations, reviewing plans and construction for compliance with City standards, and working alongside engineers, contractors, and other professionals on public infrastructure projects.

From signal equipment and conduit to streetlights and new development projects, this position offers the opportunity to use your electrical knowledge in a technical inspection role with a direct connection to Medford’s transportation infrastructure. You’ll help ensure new City-owned electrical infrastructure is installed correctly and that projects move forward in accordance with approved plans and standards.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; and
  • Four (4) years of experience as a licensed General Journeyman electrician; and
  • Either:
    • Two (2) years of experience installing or inspecting traffic signals or similar public electrical infrastructure, or
    • International Traffic Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Level I certification.

Required Licenses(s) and Certifications:
  • Valid, current Oregon Driver’s License and safe driving record.
  • General Journeyman Electrician (J) license.
  • ODOT Traffic Signal Inspector certification (CTSI) or the ability to obtain within one year of date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • State of Oregon Electrical Specialty Code Inspector certificate (EI).
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Inspector certification.
  • IMSA Traffic Signals Level II certification.
  • Knowledge of 170/2070/ATC controllers.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.

Available Schedule: 

  • 8 hours daily, Monday - Friday

The anticipated hiring range for the Traffic Signal Electrical Inspector position is $34.75 (first step) to $36.49 or $38.32 (second or third step). The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, and qualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Schedules and conducts inspections of foundations, conduit, cabinets and other equipment for traffic signal and street light installations.
  • Prepares record drawings for street light installations using drafting software (such as Auto CAD).
  • Reviews plans and ensures construction meets specifications; reviews equipment and facilities as required; gives final approval to electrical aspects of projects.
  • Serves as the contact for inquiries related to electrical inspection and prepares and maintains records and reports.
  • Prepares daily inspection reports and maintains records of work performed.
  • Provides technical advice and information to architects, engineers, contractors, craftsmen, property owners, maintenance personnel, engineering staff, and citizens regarding codes, regulations, and requirements for streetlights, traffic signals, and any related or similar electrical infrastructure. 
  • May assist Department management providing court testimony related to electrical code violations.
  • Completes designated job tasks, special projects, and all other duties as assigned to meet team, department, and City goals while working cooperatively, efficiently, and productively in a team environment.
  • Actively demonstrates high levels of employee engagement, accountability, coachability, and responsibility for personal performance and results. 
  • Demonstrates initiative to incorporate and implement learning principles from informal and formal training, as well as feedback from leaders and co-workers.
  • Required to drive to attend off-site meetings and perform inspections. Some inspections will be required during off-hours when work occurs at night to minimize impacts to the traveling public. 
  • The scope of the assigned responsibilities may vary based on departmental structure and at the discretion of the Department Director or designee.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:  
Work occurs in both an office and the field, with exposure to outdoor weather including heat, cold, rain, and snow. Field duties take place along active roadways, signalized intersections, and construction sites. Hazards include moving traffic, heavy equipment operating, energized electrical systems, noise, fumes, and dust. Public contact is frequent, with potential exposure to disruptive individuals. Occasional contact with insects or brush may occur.

The position primarily requires standing and walking over uneven roadside terrain, with occasional sitting. Duties involve frequent bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and climbing ladders. Must regularly lift up to 25 pounds (testing meters and tools) and occasionally up to 50 pounds (cabinets and signal heads). Fine manual dexterity is required for handling wiring and diagnostic tools. Normal color vision is essential to distinguish electrical phase wiring and signal indications. Adequate hearing, visual acuity, and verbal communication skills are essential for interacting with staff and the public, maintaining traffic awareness, and safely operating vehicles.
