SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for performing and leading a variety of analytical chemistry, environmental monitoring, and wastewater compliance testing procedures in support of regulatory, operational, and environmental requirements. Precision and accuracy in the execution of testing procedures, data collection, and reporting are essential. Duties include planning daily laboratory workflow; coordinating sample scheduling and turnaround times; implementing special projects; assisting in the development, modification, validation, evaluation, and improvement of analytical methods; reviewing and interpreting test results; supporting statistical analysis and trending of laboratory data; troubleshooting analytical issues; performing basic maintenance and repair of laboratory instrumentation and equipment; and maintaining laboratory quality records and regulatory documentation.

 

This position supports wastewater compliance programs through the analysis of environmental and process samples using established methods and procedures. Responsibilities may include testing associated with wastewater treatment operations, including but not limited to pH, solids, nutrients, oxygen demand, fats/oils/grease, metals, and other regulatory or operational parameters required to support facility permits and environmental compliance objectives.

 

This position will be expected to cross-train on applicable departmental methods and procedures and be capable of supporting multiple laboratory functions as business needs require. The position must comply with all laboratory quality systems, safety requirements, environmental regulations, and company policies; assist in training new employees; present scientific or technical information as assigned; and perform designated laboratory leadership responsibilities necessary to support daily operations. Additional requirements include managing sample workflow, monitoring turnaround times, fulfilling customer and internal stakeholder requests, reviewing analytical results, maintaining records required for regulatory compliance, and performing other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:
Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, Microbiology, Chemical Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, or related physical sciences.

 

Experience:
Minimum of four years of laboratory experience. Experience in environmental, wastewater, industrial, analytical chemistry, or compliance testing laboratories is preferred.

 

Computer Skills:
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and electronic data management systems.

 

Communication Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate analytical findings, regulatory information, and technical data to laboratory personnel, operations teams, and management.

Special Skills:

  • Ability to perform complex analytical procedures and operate sophisticated laboratory instrumentation with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently while exercising sound technical judgment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot analytical methods, instrumentation, and routine laboratory issues.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality systems, environmental regulations, and good laboratory practices.
  • Ability to review data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established quality requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applicable testing methods through successful completion of proficiency evaluations and quality assurance requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing laboratory information management systems for sample login, tracking, result reporting, record retention, and data retrieval.
  • Understanding of wastewater treatment processes, environmental monitoring programs, and regulatory compliance requirements is preferred.

Training Programs:
The training requirements for this job classification have been assessed by laboratory management and are maintained within the applicable laboratory training management system.

Supervisory:
This position provides technical leadership, training, and coordination support within the laboratory but does not have direct supervisory responsibility unless otherwise assigned.
