What you'll do and what you'll bring:
Position Function
Under supervision, perform service required in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment and related equipment, complying with EPA, OSHA, and all appropriate regulations and codes. Water treatment and water cleaning duties are excluded from this classification.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Perform maintenance and repair work on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment, and report work performed on Preventive Maintenance Forms.
Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate various hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and measuring instrumentation and equipment. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, high humidity, noise, heights, fumes, odors, oils, chemicals, dust, and may be required to wear a filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.
2. Install, adjust, and repair refrigeration, heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems, including but not limited to ice machines, freezers, refrigerators, drinking fountains, and other appliances.

3. Troubleshoot, adjust, repair, and calibrate controls on all HVAC/R equipment. Read and monitor gauges, meters, and thermostats, and adjust and repair control systems.

4. Inspect, maintain, and lubricate HVAC/R related pumps, motors, dampers, and other related equipment; inspect and clean coils and fans; inspect belts, vibration absorbers, and other related equipment.

5. Maintain and operate central chilling plant equipment, geothermal heat pump chillers, fluid coolers, cooling towers, and the chilled and hot water distribution system, including large tonnage centrifugal chillers, heat pump chillers, air dirt separators, distribution pumps, and associated control systems.

6. Perform preventive maintenance and repair on swimming pool and fountain mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, heaters, heat exchangers, filters, valves, and related equipment. Water treatment, water chemistry, chemical dosing, bacteriological testing, and water or basin cleaning for pools, fountains, and other water features are excluded from this classification.

7. Read and interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications pertaining to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment to ensure compliance with appropriate codes.

8. Acquire and maintain knowledge of various job-related chemicals, environmental concerns, and technological improvements and advancements, including refrigerant transition requirements for low global warming potential refrigerants.

9. Inspect, maintain, repair, and install insulation on water lines, steam lines, pumps, and other HVAC/R related equipment. Work on steam systems under this position is limited to low pressure systems operating at or below 15 pounds per square inch. High pressure steam generation and distribution remain the responsibility of the Heat Plant and District Energy Station classifications.

10. Operate building automation systems related to HVAC/R, including computer hardware and software.

11. Construct, fabricate, remodel, maintain, and repair air system fabrications for HVAC/R systems as directed.

Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.
12. Maintain accurate records of work orders, material usage, and refrigerant purchase, use, recovery, and disposal in compliance with EPA recordkeeping requirements under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act and applicable HFC regulations.

Minimum Qualifications
1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
2. Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; or five (5) years of commercial HVAC or refrigeration experience, including experience with low pressure chillers; or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
3. EPA Section 608 Universal certification as noted in federal register 40 CFR 82 Sub Part F to handle all refrigerants. Proof of certification type must be provided upon request. Universal certification is required because this position services equipment in both high pressure (Type II) and low pressure (Type III) categories, including chillers.
4. Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform mathematical functions.
5. Scissor lift operator certification in accordance with OSHA and ANSI standards, or the ability to obtain certification within ninety (90) days of hire.
6. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.
7. Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
8. Must be 18 years or older.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Vocational School Training.
2. Experience with electronic controls for HVAC systems.
3. Over six (6) years HVAC/R experience.
4. Experience with centrifugal chillers with over 1000 tons in capacity.
5. Experience with geothermal heat pump and ground source district energy systems.
6. HVAC journey worker certification through a US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program.
7. R-410A safety training and training in the safe handling of A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerants.
8. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
9. Electrical systems experience.
