Shift Supervisor provides advanced clinical expertise and leadership for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) services. This role is responsible for initiating, monitoring, and maintaining ECMO systems in accordance with established protocols while ensuring patient safety and high-quality care. In addition to direct clinical responsibilities, the Shift Supervisor oversees daily ECMO operations, staff assignments, and competency development, serving as both a clinical resource and team leader.Education & Experience
Education and Experience Required:
Associate's degree in Respiratory Care or related science and three (3) years of respiratory care work experience
Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:
Respiratory Care Practitioner from Mississippi Department of Health and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care.
Preferred Qualifications:
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from American Heart Association
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
In-depth knowledge of respiratory care and ECMO clinical practice. Advanced troubleshooting, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. Supervisory and organizational abilities, including staff scheduling and performance oversight. Strong teaching, mentoring, and leadership abilities. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage flexible scheduling, including on-call shifts. Passing score on annual competency exam and must complete annual safety training. Competency in ECMO system management will be ensured initially and on an ongoing basis, and may include animal models.
Responsibilities
- Initiates, manages, and monitors extracorporeal life support according to protocol.
- Obtains and analyzes blood samples, monitors ACTs, blood gases, and chemistry values, and adjusts ECMO system parameters as needed.
- Troubleshoots ECMO circuit issues including clots, air, pressure changes, and heat exchanger performance.
- Administers fluids, blood products, and medications as directed by ECMO protocols.
- Ensures all ECMO equipment and supplies are functional and ready for use.
- Completes accurate and timely documentation of ECMO activities and patient status.
- Reports pertinent information on patient and circuit status to ECMO physicians, coordinators, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Directs daily ECMO operations and staff workflow, ensuring adherence to hospital policies and program standards.
- Oversees staff assignments and ensures appropriate coverage for ECMO services.
- Supervises, evaluates, and mentors ECMO staff, supporting professional development and competency validation.
- Assists with training, orientation, and continuing education of ECMO team members.
- Participates in departmental and hospital committees, task forces, and projects to improve ECMO services and patient outcomes.
- Engages in ECMO-related quality improvement, safety initiatives, and research activities.
- Provides education and consultation to patients, families, and interdisciplinary staff regarding ECMO care.
- Promotes a culture of collaboration, safety, and exceptional patient care.
- Ensures compliance with all annual competencies, certifications, and safety training requirements.
